I remember the first chess lesson I ever took in Russia. My coach put both kings on their starting positions, gave me a pawn on e2 and said "Win".  I still believe this is FAR more important to a beginner than learning how any kind of opening works.

yes. essential endgame and middlegame is MUCH BETTER. some school I believe tries to get huge advantages in opening, but that is lazy and cheesy

Yep. You can refute or look up any opening in the books.  Endgames and middlegames require much more precision.

To paraphrase: chess is so complicated a game, it obviously takes a great intelligence to deal with it. But because, in the Soviet Union, where bullying and intimidation are the way the country is run, the rigid rules of chess are an escape from a world utterly hostile to the thinking mind.

ahahaha grin.png you do not know anything about the USSR, only from the TV

It's simple. In the USSR there were good children's chess schools, where the most talented players were selected

in 1991 they got paid very well to play chess in The Soviet Union. It was their way of' humping the leg' of the west. They wanted to show superiority so they made great chess players. Meanwhile the US was growing freedom and democracy around the world. Which seem more worthwhile to me.

Play a board  or invade Iraq?

The whole Iraq thing happened after 9/11 eleven years after 1991.
