Why are some people slower than others at chess?

Some are born for chess. Others for other games like checkers, monopoly, card games, domino games, etc. Its no deal if one is slow in learning chess. Just ignore the teasers.

My question was about whether or not you feel that you have a specific human-potential-academic-study quote that would justify reference to "laziness", "lack of discipline", etc. in connection with chess study. If I am following you correctly, you do not feel that you have such a quote.

Whether you think you can or think you can't.......you're right

You think the Ford quote establishes that one can always do something if one thinks that one can?

It's about the power of belief and perseverance.  We did put a man on the moon, after all.

You think the moon landing establishes that one can always do something if one thinks that one can?

Pretty much, yeah.

I've finished with this thread.......your comments have turned augmentative. You are welcome to your pessimistic beliefs.

I will always tell my students and my children, "nobody's gets to tell you what you can or can't achieve".

I dont think reality is pessimism. It's good that you tell your kids that nobody gets to tell them what they can achieve. But there is also the reality side of it, every day people will accurately and truthfully tell your kids what they will and will not achieve. And there is nothing you can do about it except prepare them for that.
