The simple overlooked answer is that men are superior to men! This is mainly due to the fact that we have bigger muscles are thus stronger, faster, more durable, and better equipped for pretty much anything physical than women. Mentally, men are simply better and more focused becasue they dont have the same things hindering them: kids, and the desire for kids. Women were meant to procreate not compete with men in silly board games!

I would think there's far less evidence on that either way. There are many thousands of both male and female chess players. How many openly homosexual chess players are there, and would players nearer the top be reluctant to admit to being homosexual and therefore skew the results?

Honestly, most of what I have pointed out has just been in jest.  I believe 'a woman' can be as good at chess as a man.  However, 'in general' women just aren't as good at chess as men.
The reasons are fairly obvious.  I don't think women should take it personally.

Yes, this thread covers MANY reasons why women struggle with outperforming men in chess.  Some guys were a bit brutal, and 3rd worldish with their explanations, but asking why women aren't as good at chess as men, is sorta like asking "why aren't women as good at war as men".

3 things a woman should never do:

1. Smoke cigars

2. Drink Beer

3. Play chess

These rights exclusively belong to the male gender. Take these away and nothing remains. Men may just as well crawl into the nearest hole and die a peaceful death.

I don't smoke. But your rights are my lefts.... i.e we look at them from opposing points of view.

1 & 2 are no problem, as:

#1 - Nasty, toxic, disgusting things. Rot your teeth, blacken your lungs, make you smell like... well, things that needn't be said around children. 

#2 - Horrible. Why not just drink that rotten orange juice in the back of your fridge? At least the OJ won't make you fat.

However, #3 I simply can't wrap my head around. Why would this particular game/sport/puzzle be the purview of men-only?
