The word "pieces" excludes Pawns.

The word "men" includes both pieces and Pawns.

The OP is a new-ish player, and he hasn't developed any board vision yet. Why not just tell him that the queen can't be taken because it is protected by the bishop on b2?

Simply because it will be beneficial for him finding out the Queen's guard himself.
