Why can't you promote a pawn to king?

Yes. You take a pawn that has been captured and stack it on top of the pawn that has reached the end of the board. Now it has the power to move both forward and backward. Have you never played checkers? (aka draughts for across-the-ponders.)
Hey.... are they also called pawns in checkers❓❔ I don't think so.....

"There's only one crown."

Coincidentally, that's why the black and white kings are facing off, to begin with.
The reason you can't promote a Pawn to a King is because IT'S THE RULES!! Why do people keep coming up with obsurdities "to make chess more challenging"?

Didn't the rules evolve? Was a rule passed that said no more rules or chess variants? I'm not trying to tip over the chesboard here, just having a little fun. Is there a rule in chess you can't have fun and play with ideas, or do you have to be serious?

If you think not promoting to a king is bad wait until you see this Chess Variant. It was created in a province of china
The game was created in the late century during the reign of Genghis Khan the name of the chess variant is known as "The Golden Horde".
It was originally known as "The Golden Horde" For it encompassed people to use only pawn's to invade into the black position. The pawn's were made out of solid Gold. Which is why it was known as the Golden Horde. Until recent times the name has changed to becoming only "The Horde" it is partly due becuase gold is more expensive and value now so people use plastic piece's instead.
The object of the game is 2 fold.
For White to win:
White must Horde his pawn's to the back row to check mate the black king. Either with his individual pawn's or by promoting to a piece of value (Knight, Bishop, Rook, Queen)
For Black to win:
Black must annihilate all of the white pawn's and escape the pawn invasion alive with out being checkmated.
The Victory shall be showered in rich's and the Loser shall be annihilated.
Do you have what it takes to stand alone against the fury of the Horde Army?
DUN DUN DUN!!!
AND THAT IS ALL.

Would it be considered double check if you promoted to a king and your opponent forked your two kings? Or would it just be mate if you couldn't save them both?

As per the aforemention 'rules' of this silly pointless fantasy chess going nowhere experiment, If your last king is mated it's game over.

Think again.
I think they are reffered to as 'men'..... or you just call them piece.... "White or black piece"

This is a really stupid thread. Another stupid idea is to say whenever the king and queen are adjacent in a corner the queen has a baby ( a new pawn comes into the game.)

Sounds like you need to get laid. If that's what it is, you're better off dressing up as a monster, stalking and pestering someone else. It would never work between us - you're not into whimsical goof-off threads, and I'm not into fantasy characters.
Speaking of arbitrary nonsense, you do realize that in the ultimate scheme of things, the whole game of chess is rather arbitrary and based on a lot of fantasy and medival stuff right? It's just an invention, with arbitrary rules and it's just a *game* that a lot of people happen to take very seriously (along with themselves, apparently). I'm sure highly skilled martial artists think chess is pretty silly.

Oh yeah PAL and highly skilled chess players find martial artist silly. Who needs Kung Fu when you got a shot gun with very accurate aim.
Why can't you promote to a piece of the opposite colour?
Because it doesn't make any sense. Now if you were going to suggest promoting to a 3rd color, I'd have to agree. That would be interesting. Or at least a colourful variation.
