It's a largely generalized Statement and what I have mostly seen is that it's actually those who don't play chess that put the chess players on a pedestal ( they are super intelligent, smart etc) and that sort of creates an ego problem among immature chess players

Compared to the many groups of people I have encountered in life chess players seem to the nicest. Online is an entirely different thing. I think its the fact that people can remain anonymous causes them to act differently than how they would in real life.

A person's value in life is determined by his/her ELO. The higher the ELO, the more $$ a person makes and the better looking will be his/her soulmates. People who play tournament chess generally don't see it because they are much more likely to believe the superiority based on rating.
