In the late 1970's, I attended a talk by George Koltanowski, a past president of the USCF, who was involved in the negotiations for the 1975 match (I'm not sure if he was directly involved or indirectly involved, but he was aware of what was going on). It was his opinion that Fischer was afraid of losing. According to George, Fischer would make demands, the organizers would meet them, and Fischer would make more demands. Eventually, the organizers tired of this, and told Fischer to play or forfeit the Championship. Fischer forfeited the Championship.
