Well gosh, it's a good thing you put that thing about "sarcasm dripping," Venerable Master, otherwise I never would've gotten it.

Oh yeah, and thanks for bringing your own stop sign along.  Another one of those guys...

Bobby Fischer’s Remarkable Rise and Fall — From America’s Brightest Prodigy to the Edge of Madness

By Frank Brady

I did.  In fact, here's my review (from goodreads):

Could've easily been twice as long. The writer seems to be very much a part of these polite-nik times, and consequently invokes all the bugaboos which are supposed to willy-nilly give us the shudders: racism, sexism, homophobia, pedophiles and so forth (I'm surprised he wasn't able to throw smoking into the mix). In addition to a number of errors of fact I encountered along the way, there were (perhaps more importantly) errors of judgment. Thus, Ginzburg's accusations (circa 1960) of Fischer's anti-homosexual and misogynist stances were (frankly) simply not that abhorrent back then...whatever we are all inclined (with our no doubt much greater enlightenment now) to make of them these days. Also, Brady seems to be implying that the Soviets were cheating by going over the adjourned game with Botvinnik...whereas in fact everyone was allowed back then to colloborate on analyzing adjournments (the only thing that made it seem like cheating was that the Soviets were so much better back then than everyone else on the planet).

Can you imagine how great of a match Fischer vs. Karpov WOULD have been?

Avatar of AndyClifton

Yes...as great of a match as Karpov vs Kasparov.  Probably not as great as 5 of those though.  Smile

Do you think it was solely because he disagreed with FIDE's rules or conditions?  or deeper, once he had accomplished his life's dream, was it that he just felt he had nowhere to go now and/or there was nothing else to prove?  (I think I read somewhere that one of the past champions, Karpov maybe, said Bobby was afraid.)

What say ye?

Bobby wanted to win the world championship. he did and proved he had no equal. did he ever say he wanted to keep it ? hmmm ?

Well, that argument works for 1972.  But calling the match in 1992 a "world championship" comes off more than a bit silly.

Worryingly Fischer may have translated to something like ?

Pionob vs Kapnob ! :-)

Avatar of CalamityChristie

Bobby would most likely have referred to them as "A pair of Nobbers!!!"

it worked for me Laughing  i loved the nostalgia, the WC games had been so crappy, post-Bobby

i remember the game where he lined up his 3 heavy pieces on the a-file in a Ruy Lopez!

who'd have thought of it ?

Wow, not sure what you're looking at...I thought K vs K were the greatest matches ever (especially #5).

Regardless, it would have been a great match to have been played out. Perhaps if you believe in parallel worlds like in science fiction stories, the match was played out. Maybe Bobby won the rematch, maybe he did not. We in this universe will never know.

uh-oh...

Hey I remember that episode with the other Mr. Spock ( still very logical tho  lol ).

Time to haul out the serious conspiracy theories I guess. I heard a interesting rumour that a agent of the USSR ( read KGB spy here ) told Fischer that if he did not resign his title he would not live long enough to defend it. Buffalo Chips is what people might say to that but what of that famous recent killing in the UK ( by a Russian spy ) ? Yes the former Russian reporter who moved to the UK but then was poisoned ( on orders from the top, allegedly ). Again as Fischer left no last letter that was to be released after his death the truth will never be known.

jeez Andy, yes it took getting the first 4 behind them to get half decent!

of course i'm not being serious!!!

i was referring to the fact that Fischer and Spassky set more of a scene than the K's

Yeah but you cant just go making stuff up either.  Where is any evidence that the KGB threatened Fischer?  Don't you think that would be a little too risky to chance getting into a bona fide confrontation with the U.S. over?

Hey, I'm not always too quick at latching onto these humor things (undoubtedly this is a by-product of the severe demeanor you can glimpse in my picture).

Jeez cab, where do you come up with your cussin' lexicon, from this guy? (heehee!)...

Avatar of CalamityChristie

i was very disappointed Karpov couldn't get Kasparov to wear mirror fronts in any of those matches!

it's the silly things i find so memorable.

Johnmusacha: I can assure you that I did not make that rumour up. Mind you I do not know your age but I will admit that it is a older rumour. As far as the KGB was concerned those were not fun people, numerous books have been written about the Spy War part of the Cold War. As for the leadership of the USSR goes I guess the Cuban Missle Crisis shows best that they were prepared to push things quite far.

AndyClifton: " HORSE-POOP ", put that in your Pipe and smoke it  lol.
