Why do Americans like Bobby Fischer?

Most people from your day seemed to refer to anyone they disagreed with as a communist.  Now it liberal and communist are analogous as well as conservative and fascist.  Perhaps it was in the 60's and 70's, but I can't be sure since I wasn't born until 85.

Stevie, I attended 2 demonstrations in front of the White House- 1 under Lyyndon Johnson, and 1 under Dick Nixon. I have known communists, but I have never been one. There are some in this country who believe that if don't see the reason for going to war, you are a communist.

Ye there kinda funny like that..They Express liberal notions with communist ethics before election then change the writing on the barn door when elected..they use words like "everybody will get and everyone deserves"  and then it becomes well some deserve it more than others and we will decide who! Sorry chopwood this is all i am going to display politicaly..We are not allowed, chess .com have strict rules.

The greatest warlord in history (in my opinion of course) believed war should always be the last resort.  I think Fischer is one of the greatest chess players in history and in that regard I respect him; but I have no respect for his racist views.

Who's the "greatest warlord in history", spartanemesis? By "greatest", I assume you mean murdered the most people/occupied the most land, right?

SPARTANEMESIS

Sun-Tzu, and feel free to assume what you want.

trysts

What do you mean by "greatest warlord" then? I only assume, because the word "greatest" is left undefined. If I say "greatest movie", it is also left undefined, but people don't ask me what I mean, but instead define it themselves.

SPARTANEMESIS

Trysts, above you state: "I only assume," as I said before feel free.  Sun-Tzu is author of The Art of War.  I would like to detail his conquests for you if that is your desire, however I gave my copy of the book to a good friend.  I can tell you that his teachings seem to have influenced every military manual since its origin.  One important aspect which seems to often go overlooked is that he teaches, in warfare, about taking the enemy down with the absolute minimal loss of life and damage to land and property.  Of course it didn't always work out for him that way.  However he was unrivaled in military concepts during his time.

trysts

I see.

SPARTANEMESIS

Do you?

trysts

I believe so. You think highly of his "military" exploits, right?

SPARTANEMESIS

It occurred to me that I did make one error in reference to what I stated of Sun-Tzu.  He was not really the author of The Art of War, he didn't spend his time writing books, he is simply referred to as the author as the text is credited entirely to him, from his teachings.

Are you asking if I think he should've been more interested in killing everyone and utter annihilation?

During his time, what was the difference?

No, I imagine he murdered many people, being a General.

Kasparov has recently conceded that, because of rating inflation, his rating of    2851 might not have been superior to Fischr's 1972 figure of 2785.

He won a lot of things, made a lot of money, lied to everyone, cheated, and was selfish. Americans like Ayn Rand as wellWink

I'm American and I don't like Lance Armstrong. Does that answer your question? I must admit I like Bobby Fischer because he inspired me to learn chess.

Americans love Fischer because he is one of their own... It's too bad that he was  a racist moron that did more damage to the image/popularity of chess than good.  Now whenever an american thinks of chess players, they conjour up the image of a reclusive insane nerd.  Its too bad people with class such as Carlsen, Anand or Kramnik don't have the same impact.
