Why would people still look at Fischer as the one who beat the Russians? The American propaganda against the Russians still has people confused after 40 years! That is some impressive brain-washing.
Why do Americans like Bobby Fischer?

@chopwood
And then Fischer got on the radio and cheered, as the victims of the WTC attacks were still burning alive. Jumping out of windows to their deaths, only to escape the torturous flames. With Bobby laughing like a madman the entire time. Every death another triumph in his twisted mind.
Bobby Fischer is worthless.
Sun Tzu wasn't a warlord, he was a general.
During his time, what was the difference?
He didn't have civil authority and held allegiance to a king. If he's your favorite "warlord" perhaps you'd be interesting in researching it yourself. Chinese history is very rich and complex.
Have you considered the possibility that I may have already read more books than you will read in your entire life? I just haven't limited my reading to aspects of warfare. Anyway in the real world (as opposed to online) I'm very careful about who I even bother wasting my time talking to. Furthermore in the real world I expect to be well paid when I have to deal with... there I go wasting my time again.

I believe that "severe mental disorder" is called his opinion. Nothing against you, Mr_Norm, as the norm seems to be that if a hero has a disagreeable opinion then it's just not his fault. He didn't choose to have that opinion which is so distasteful, but rather he was possessed by some demon! Wasn't Fischer supposed to be a genius? Couldn't he have actually been reflecting for quite awhile about what he thinks of the world, just like anyone else, and concluding with a world-view which does not fit the ideal of a hero in some fan's mind?

Arguing about who was history's greatest general is as futile as arguing about who the greatest chessplayer was/is.

I used to attend teh same church as Bobby Fischer..The World Wide Church of God. I think Fischer was a nut job and he was mentally very sick. Sad indeed!

"Why Do Americans like Lance Armstrong?"
He won a lot of things, made a lot of money, lied to everyone, cheated, and was selfish. Americans like Ayn Rand as well
Did you check out Oprah's interview with Fischer? Been looking for it. As she has interviewed everybody.

As to Bobby beating the Russians: I lived through the time of Soviet dominance in chess. Every chessplayer who aspired to the world championship knew the deck was stacked against them. a single great chessplayer from England or Germany could not survive the match play, where some Russians were going to concede or draw, so that their country man could win. Yes, they were good, but they could manipulate the outcome, to the frustration of more than just the Americans. Even Russians were frustrated, as has been revealed, by having to follow orders.

Yes, here is part 1 of 8.

At the candidates match in Zurich, 9 Soviet Grandmasters prearranged several results in games amongst themselves to successfully prevent the overall victory by Reshevsky. I studied with Reshevsky in the 1980s and he was no fan of Fischer. However, Fischer said that in the mid-50s "Reshevsky was the best player in the world."

Well that's a sensible address to my accusation of a pejudice against Russians based upon anti-Soviet propaganda. Thank you
Bobby Fischer was a legend and may he rest in Peace. I liked him as a chess player and a person.
I have read many of his biographies and think he is one of the greatest chess players who ever lived.
Just because he held views which are deemed unpopular in America that doesn't make him mentally ill. Only a small percentage of any population will ever think outside the box and they are usually the ones with the truth on their side.
Please! Chess has had a bunch of strange masters- Rubenstein, Steinitz, Morphy, Staunton- some stranger than others. Fischer brought chess home, expanded its appeal, and made many new masters take hope that someone could beat the Russian cabal. You could argue that a lot of European masters took heart from this single guy who stood against what had been more or less a fixed system. He was good for the entire game.
