Mine too.
Why do chess players hide behind avatars and false profiles?

Chess players hide behind avatars because otherwise you would realize we are incredibly dull people.

Uh oh spaghettios!!

I often wonder why players on this site use avatars and false profiles. It's easy to tell by the way they talk, that in some profiles they are actually males, pretending to be glamorous females. Why all the deception, and what actually is the point of this behaviour?

Wow interesting topic, I've just lost 2 hours reading from the first to last page. Lots of pro & cons.

I don't think they were playing chess lol.
What's weird to me is google search can bring up 100 models wearing next to nothing in 1 second but it seems men can't resist clicking on a 50x50 pixel picture of anything that almost looks female just to check.
But I guess this is why advertisements have girls with huge chests front and center.
If it's stupid and it works, then it isn't stupid... I guess.

Are we pretending non-nerds aren't interested in women?
I didn't realize chess players were the new alpha male...
Alas, there is a culture of online trolldom in the United States. Adopting an online identity different from that one holds in real life frees one up for conduct that would never be accepted were one to hold to only one identity. This kind of behavior is not only seen among chessplayers; go to any online political forum or online chat venue, such as PalTalk, and you will see exactly what I'm talking about. The chat venues on Yahoo became so bad that Yahoo shut down its chat services. While chess is an arena where there isn't quite as much trolldom as in politics, news and current events, don't be surprised when you run across it. And don't be surprised if someone you find trolling in the world of chess holds to extremist views in other areas of life. By the way, in my experience, men are definitely worse, but don't be surprised if over the long haul you run into some female trolls as well. The psychological gratification of such social sadism really isn't gender-specific.
My avatar is a picture of me.
