Why do chess players hide behind avatars and false profiles?

The avatars I think are funny and clever, but I have no ideas about why people use fake profiles, unless they have been banned, and are posing as someone else to get back on the site. That's one possible scenario. The others could be that they are a) hiding their identity from the police b) they do not want recognition because they are famous people and could be snowed under with unwnted attention, c) as has already been mentioned, will get more games if they pose as an attractive female, rather than a male.

Dear Ellie, this thread's response is MORE than impressive, leading me to believe you are some kinda master troll.
The ONLY other option would be that you HARDLY know how to use the internet at all.
If the latter is the case, avatars are like 'handles' for big rig trucker's radio call names. Go ask all the best big rig truckers from the 1900's why they didn't just all go by their real names, then, why not just go ahead and use their social security numbers to replace their "4-10"s

I woudn't say it was a police thing. It wouldn't matter it you had your real id on...Celebs..yes! Already banned people! Women get stalked! Some like to exress themselves differently(an escape)! And those that just like to work themselves......Oh! And the disfunctional!
