Why do chess players hide behind avatars and false profiles?

Ellie seems to have the details. She organised it all. So the confusion started with somebody looking for black paint stripper. Ellie seems to have misunderstood and thought that the black male stripper that she was blackmailing spoke to somebody with close ties with some of the rough guys here. Starts to sound like jack the ripper moved down under..

Think you mean Jack the Stripper. Undecided

There's always the security issue. You don't want to give away personal information or pictures on the internet.

There is something fishy about that big picture!  G'saurus.

I assumed you were speaking of the fish. Here's a pic - not certain if it's a male - but they are hard to tell apart

As some members have pointed out, it is the impersonators and those wish to disrupt the functioning of the site you need take caution of.

Perhaps insecurity? Disatisfied with their accomplishments? I'm sure you'll find a lot of written work online attempting to explain this "loss of identity".

Sam, play our song...one more time.

Of course...'Ding dong the witch is dead, which old witch, the wicked witch...'

Now we are getting somewhere. We need to get more confirmation because the two scenarios are both quite plausible. Scenario 1 : ellie has blackmailed a stripper who is now having his revenge by releasing some of his spicy inside information through the network here. Scenario 2 : ellie is effectively male and black and extremely muscular in all the right places, which gives him great street cred. Who has any additional info?

I still think Ellie may be a 14 year old male troll.  Just think, how clever.  Act like a lady who has never hardly used the internet, and then question anybody else on the internet, about the internet's easiest functions, and online situational issues.

It's quite possible, my lord. Just look at what this thread has become!

Trolls are part and parcel of chess.com, it's the stupid uncreative trolls without a story who irk me the most. You'd least expect them to be witty.

Yes...and of course the lulz comes from all the trolling a thread like this will encourage.

Agreed. And if not witty...at least curiously odd.

Well...one can troll without trolling. Just think of Kaynight and Kleeof, to name 2 members who have posted some very witty comments. I'm sure there are dozens more out there, but those 2 usually get the job done right the first time. TheGrobe is another clever member here. JamieDelarosa probably knows more than I do.

Yes. There are people who take things way too seriously, are way too sensitive, are incompetent, and the list goes on. The more one explains, the more that person is trolling, and not even knowing it.

Not really.  Some people Troll with malice, some don't.  It's a fine line.  Dec29....the last sentence is spot on.

It's happened to me time and time again. Especially when the subject being discussed has something to do with women...
