The point of no return. You wish you had done all those things in the past four years, but now you are too old to do them.

We all cant wait to get to certain ages...

10...because im no longer a single digit age.

13...because im now a teenager! Which is probably the dumbest point of anyone's life.

16...so i can drive.  This is why all us old people have to pay so much for insurance.

18...Im legally an adult.  But still stupid and immature.

21...I can drink.  Now i get to act like an idiot in public.

For me, the only birthday that bothered me was 30.  At the time it sounded so old.  I was no longer in my 20's.  Now that im 57, I can truly understand, and appreciate what i always heard about getting older.  It is the best time of your life.

This is why we have the short school buses.

Special jobs for special people.

Gold stars.

And t-ball.  So everyone can feel like a winner!

Participation award. You got last place but at least you tried.

One of the worst ideas in the history of bad ideas.  We now have a generation that is not taught to lose, how to deal with it, and how to learn from it.

The biggest problem with Participation Awards is the idea of awards in general. The reward for playing Chess, is playing Chess.

I mean, they retire. That is normal. You expect Yuri Averbakh to play like Hikaru?

No, but if they only retire because they can't be number 1 anymore (as Kasparov did), then they're doing so for the wrong reasons. I think he would be a much happier person today if he'd continue to compete.

I recently saw a YouTube video where an international master scrolled through his opening prep for just one specific opening. The document seemed endless.
