Why do people leave the game in the middle?

Why do people leave the game in the middle without resigning when their position is weak. This has happened to me many times.

Arctor

Because they're assholes. Just take comfort in knowing you played them off the board

Dragec

Because they can, and because they want to. Wink

Its really tough, i decided not to play games more than 15 minutes. there was a guy whom i played with said... wait for 22 min to win... and he made moves so slowly that i was really feeling the heat...

Its a gentleman's game and some are really worth not to be here.

I think if someone is abonding the game, then the admin should either reduce the points heavily or even ban them for one or two days.. its a bit harsh

Choose a time control and don't complain afterwards

So we should play only bullet because there are douches in the world?

heinzie

No play 45 45 games and don't be surprised and moan if your opponent uses those 45 minutes. It's up to your opponent what he does with the time that is given to him.

I play a lot of tournaments and there are a few people that don't bother to make a move. It could be a 2,3 or even 5 days per move. I have anywhere from 20-30 games going on at one time. I don't have time to worry about idiots who are too scared to play! You can't control what other people do,so just worry about the games that are playing. I don't care what the time control is,I PLAY MY GAMES!!. So if anyone has a challenge, bring it! I don't care for 15 min games. I like to play, not fly!

The problem is that once you pick the time control for the game you're stuck with it. As for people leaving the game when they have a weak middle game, thats the way it is. We live in a world where people would rather walk away than face their problems....

JazzTChess

It sounds annoying, but on the other hand, I thought you automatically win if they time out.

szammie

Those who leave n the middle of games either consider it resigning without actually doing so.  Also, they might b 2 busy kickin themselves, get hurt & time runs out.

In OTB you can walk around and leave the board.  You can do the same thing online.  If the other guy plays slowly or leaves in the middle, open a new tab and do something else.  Read some articles or do some puzzles.  Doesn't really matter.   I'd go to armorgames.com.  Play the latest game and wait for the click that tells you your opponent has moved.  No one is keeping your eyes glued to the virtual chess board.

I amsometimes dropped because of my poor Internet connection, but when it happens I normally send an apology to my opponent and, if he is online, offer a rematch.

heinzie

I did that in a normal game last year, I was playing at an OK pace, was up a little of time, and then suddenly lightning struck and my opponent had a lethal passed pawn on the fifth rank that wasn't dangerous in any way half a move before. So I went calculating for 35 of my 40 remaining minutes. On the Internet I would have been suspended for such a thing (waiting in losing position). Just leave me alone when my clock is ticking and hasn't run out yet.

The problem is that some people lose their connection automatically - it might be a connection problem rather than a personality problem. They can't be banned by a Chess website for this.

ringwraith10

which is why long games are impractical online...

3 0 and 1 0!!

princesize

Because most of the people never pay for any memberships. Thus they don't take the game seriously. They always disconnected intentionally when they are losing. Only solution to solve this problem is not to allow any free memberships. Charge a reasonable amount and when someone is disconnected, they automatically loses the game.

NOBODY CARES WHEN THEY GOT SOMETHING FOR FREE! Tongue out

vinothbabu

May be we can have an option where it can says how many games he or she has abonded

thenfly

I just block and thumbs down players who abandon - curious how their connection is always

fine when they're ahead, but as soon as they blunder their connection is suddenly weak.

Very suspicious. Terrible...
