It's not really religious leaders in general though, is it?

good question. Religious leaders, authority, state, tyranny, dictatorship, whatever...

Ha Ha. I meant It's not really the leaders of all religions. Don't recall, for example, the Bhuddists having anything against chess

Actually there is an obscure writing telling Buddhists that some unknown game--possibly chess or parchesi or such--is no substitute for meditation. But they do not actually condemn chess. Also Einstein who was a personal friend and colleague of Emanuel Lasker--Lasker was like Einstein a math professor--said chess is a waste of time. Latest studies, however, show that children who play chess do better in school and chess benefits senior citizens because it keeps their minds sharp and staves off dementia. The only leader of any sort who has condemned chess over chess' 1000 year history is the Saudi Arabian who was mentioned above. Judging from the Saudi involvement in 9/11 other nefarious deeds the Saudi statements carry no weight except with other Saudis.

There is still not a shred of evidence to suggest that religious leaders feel threatened by it and i suspect that the claim there is is nothing more than some veiled atheism masquerading as fact.

Actually, this is not true. Surprisingly perhaps, chess has also been condemned (and forbidden) by the Christian and Judaic religions:

One bird makes not springtime, one muftimollah makes not the universal law; the guy is useless, totally leaving in hell on earth, and promising hell on earth and paradise after death. Big deal!

Such a guy is just n-o-t-h-i-n-g; in a litteral sense , nihilis, meaning he isnada, niente, nichts, no brain, no soul, nuts; good to kill the one who thinks not like him.

They were reformed in TOULOUSE, France, 0721, Poitiers, France, 0732, then started stgh till 1400 from Harun Al Rashid till Saladdin and sq., then only murder during 500+ years, world record. They soon will be reformed..again. they mainly produce babies, leran them to kill, then get killed. They are losers, hundred again one ...they lose! World record. We need them as homers, as far as oil is there!

then, as bad lifeinsurance sellers, they come each hundred year by the window when we fire them by the door.Laughing.

They are NOT religious leaders, they are just victims of sun on head, .... sunny sunnis !Laughing.

The fellow from Quom is not after chess, but..wine. Will get same result.

Sooner they will get a lesson, as usual; Boring, isn't it ?

I am the coach of a chess club at a Christian church. We use chess as a tool to mentor kids.

Blood in stool is more threatening than chess even to a bull.

Its really quite interesting.  I use chess as a form of meditation.  Setting up the board and the pieces and thinking deeply upon the juxtaposition of the chessmen and any possibilities that might arise.  Bronstein was the first i heard of using this approach having famously taken fifteen minutes or possibly more to decide his first move.
