Why do some chess players show egocentric behavior sometimes?

Hello, I saw a post here on chess.com's forums with the following name: "Why chessplayers are arrogant and have an enormous ego?"

The person who wrote the post practically got roasted by the people, stating that this was simply a generalization of not much importance, that was 9 years ago.

That's why, I would like to renew the post, with a more realistic and appropriate question, which is the following: Why do some chess players show egocentric behavior sometimes?

I think it is true that by playing chess you can encounter a wild number of people who are taunting, trash-talking, and even bullying the players, or that simply get mad because they lose or any behavior like that.

You see this at a low level, like in street chess, online chess, say ELO 1800 - 2400, or even at the top level (considering we have seen players like Magnus Carlsen or Garry Kasparov have shown anger while playing), and taking it comes because they don't acknowledge lost as an acceptable result for them.

Anyway, that's enough for me, what do you think? Why is it?

Vague question. You could replace "chess players" with any group (basketball players, accountants etc) in society and have the same answers.

Some people equate chess to how smart they are. So if you beat someone they simply can't handle defeat in an honorable way because they believe they are much smarter than you.

Some people are just jerks. And something about being on the internet seems to make those sorts of people feel like they can really let loose with their terrible behavior. Chess players are no different than any other group, like jupiter6 said. But there are lots of reasonable, decent people on this site.

have read that GMs are notorious for really, really hating to lose. But at the same time, the few GMs that I’ve met have been pretty cool.

Showing anger while playing =/ egocentric?

Being mad after a loss isn’t egocentric at all lmao

Morfizera

Why do some lawyers show egocentric behavior sometimes?

Why do some professors show egocentric behavior sometimes?

Why do some doctors show egocentric behavior sometimes?

Why do some businessmen show egocentric behavior sometimes?

Why do some religious people show egocentric behavior sometimes?

Why do some pet owners show egocentric behavior sometimes?

Why do some butchers show egocentric behavior sometimes?

Why do some non-chess chess players show egocentric behavior sometimes?

in my opinion they underestimate the player they are against and overestimate their own ability so when they lost they become very upset

Taking it out on your opponent through abuse, or on other people generally, is certainly egocentric. Shows the emotional maturity of a hamburger.

Making a mad face isn’t taking it out on anyone, though!

he was speaking about making an angry face not "taking it out"

technical_knockout

they're turning the pain of a loss into anger & projecting it away from themselves in self-defense, since they have poor emotion-management skills.    🙂

remember it's just mind over matter:

if YOU don't mind, IT doesn't matter.

MisterWindUpBird

Yeah, an angry emoji isn't hurting anyone. It can just express frustration at the self.

You can turn off chats during matches.

Didn't see much roasting going on then. Don't see much going on now.

Chess players are just regular humans.

Most humans are ok, most of the time.

Some humans are jerks.

Therefore some chess players are jerks, QED tongue.png

I think that the professionals who lose to other professionals and do not appropriately accept it do this because they feel like they have a flaw that needs to be fixed like how long you take to calculate a set of moves to gain the upper hand when it comes to the start of your opening to the middle ground and then to the endgame.
