I do not aggree to this. Several players are modest including Vishy. Have you watched the movie searching for bobby fischer? It is based on real story of Joshua Waitzkin.

Maybe they objectify everything, and can't tell the difference between the pieces and people. They treat both the same.

Why do you ASSume that all chessplayers are like this? How many chessplayers have you met in your life?

To paraphrase Capt Renault I'm shocked, shocked to find out that you feel this way!

Sounds like someone got pwned once too many.

@FakeMaster,

A sweeping statement, indeed!! Could you kindly justify,  or provide proof beyond reasonable doubt that it is true. For example, out of a thousand chess players across the globe that you had interacted  over the board; how many through your experience, are deemed to be arrogant and egoistic ??

They are like that because they often play chess.

Why do people who tend to make sweeping generalizations also tend to blunder so much at chess?  I think you can find both ego maniacs and extremely humble chess masters.  The ones with the eccentric personalities get more media attention and public recognition for their antics, that's all.

Generally I don't accept any stereotypical statement.  To explain why some chessplayers are arrogant with enormous egos, I would respond: "They're human.  Arrogance and ego are not uncommon to the species."

The chessplayers I've met in real life tend to be nice and humble.

The chessplayers I've met online, on the other hand... You'll run into some that will taunt and mock you if they manage to win on time.

And sometimes they even get offended and angry if you play well, as if you are being a jerk by taking their hanging pieces. :D

This is  so generic statement. You can say people are nonsense..Well they are :) However there would be certain amount of people who really are.. In a simillar fashion , there might be certain kind of chess people also be there..but not everyone dir.

A person's value in life is determined by his/her ELO. The higher the ELO, the more $$ a person makes and the better looking will be his/her soulmates. High ELO individuals receive automatic invites to parties/clubs from the British Royal Family, while low ELO people must clean their toilets. Those w/ELOs exceeding 3500 are pure-energy lifeforms that occasionally HELP low ELO folks by possessing them

Obviously if I am better at chess than you I am smarter than you and therefore a better person than you.

If you want to be as good as me, beat me at chess. Until then you occupy the lowest form of human life.

Not all chess players are like this but way too many are

Perhaps they're just trolling you. Maybe they're just pretending, in order to make you angry.

Explanation:

Chess requires a high level of strategic thinking, pattern recognition, and calculation, which can lead to a sense of intellectual superiority.

The competitive nature of chess, with its clear winners and losers, can foster a strong ego and a desire to dominate.

Success in chess often brings recognition and praise, which can inflate a player's ego and lead to arrogance.

Context:

The perception of arrogance and inflated egos among chess players is a common observation. This can be attributed to the demanding nature of the game, the intellectual prowess required, and the competitive environment. While not all chess players exhibit these traits, the characteristics are often associated with the game. 🤔

Some people believe that the intense focus and mental demands of chess contribute to why some chessplayers are perceived as arrogant and have an enormous ego.✌️😁

The arrogant ones I met in real life were teenagers I ran into at a chess club at a coffee shop in a book store

Or perhaps this topic was dead for 12 years but then it was resurrected by an insane spammer. Who knows.
