You are falling into a very common mental trap.
Many, many amateur players believe that attacking is a way (or even THE way) to gain the advantage.
It isn't.
The advantage is gained by MANEUVER. Attacking is a way to CONVERT an already-existing advantage into another, more readily usable form.
You do not attack in order to gain the advantage. You attack because you ALREADY HAVE the advantage, and you want to cash it in.
