Why do you have to be good at a young age?

I do lots of puzzles and tactics and now I can sort of purrrredict way off moves in my head is that a good sign or a bad sign?

I think that even if you are interested in chess until you are an adult, unless you get experience as a kid, you can learn, but it takes a lot longer to do that because of your load getting bigger and a lack of free time. Basically, i am saying it's possible, but gets harder to do the older you get.

The real question is how far can I progress if I win the lottery?

I am 39 and a strong Class B player.  I didn't play at all from 1992 until 2011.  At this point, after a couple of years playing and studying I am making a nice steady progress.

But I have to go to work five days a week.  And when I play it is often after a long day of work.

And yet I feel certain that I will become a NM given enough time to make that happen.  I study for 2+ hours per day.

SO...

If I win the lottery and devote 5-6 hours a day to in depth study can I become an IM?  A GM?

I personally think that these discussions are as much fun as the "What I would do if I won the lottery" discussions that don't involve chess.

Dear Chris,

I suppose that there's nothing standing between you and NM level - provided that you really want it and that you're ready to invest the time necessary to acquire and practice the necessary skills.

I suppose that at my current strength I can present a strong challenge to the average NM rated USCF 2200 (equivalent to FIDE 2100, as I'm told).

The first time I got an Israeli rating that would be parallel to the Expert level was after age 30, and I've improved quite a lot since. I was still a B player when I was 20, and only got into the D level when I was 17, being quite a steady E since the year before that, which saw a very dramatic improvement in my play, getting me into the Class E level (I was playing chess from age 5 to 16, at probably an immeasurably weak level - kind of Class F or G or whatever... although at age 12 I already beat my dad consistently in chess, who taught me the game) - so don't listen to the idiocies some people are trying to 'sell' you on. Just do what you love, and if you do it well and correctly, you will be rewarded by the results, at any age.

solskytz,

That's really the way I see it as well.

I know that NM is a possible goal.  I also know that it will take a lot of hard work to reach.

But I believe that Bruce Pandolfini knew what was talking about when he said that any adult of average intelligence could become a master without enough hard work.

This is hopefully a typo.

Yes, ha.  "With" enough hard work.

To be a NM you need to be 2200 USCF which is somewhere between 2100-2200 FIDE typically.

According to a GM i was chatting to up to 2200 is mostly tactics ..

Right. NM is 2200 USCF (comparable to 2100 FIDE I think)

2200 FIDE is Candidate Master - but recognized all over the world.

2300 FIDE is a FIDE Master - would love to make that my title one day (but first, to get good enough to be a CM)
