In fact the mathematician John Nash who suffered from schizophrenia said that playing chess can control schizophrenia. His son who also suffers from schizophrnia is a NM.

I've had schizophrenia for the last 8 years...

And? Don't leave us hanging. Does chess make any difference?

I have a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia.

For example, Fischer believed during his match with Spassky that the Russians had implanted devices in his dental filling to read his thoughts. That is typical schizophrenic thinking.

And John Nash believed aliens were sending him messages in code through the New York Times.

I hope it does. I've always played and I guess it distracts my thoughts from anxiety.

gives me something to focus on

I see.

Not to be rude, it's just that it's very interesting to me, but if you hear voices (I'm guessing not all schizophrenics do) can you have a conversation (I realize some can be abusive) and if so, can they surprise you with any information? It's interesting to me because it would mean the brain has surprised itself :)

I don't hear voices like conversation. Its more like you feel like your losing your mind

Aaaand now I feel bad for bringing up something traumatic so casually.

In any case thanks for your honest answer.

NomadicKnight

Because it is a fun intellectual engagement, and I've noticed it promotes better analytical thinking skills in everyday life. Can't say the same for Monopoly.

CrazyJae

How dare you say monopoly requires no skills you troll!

NomadicKnight

Well, it does require slight of hand to deal yourself Boardwalk and Park Place in the opening... Money Mouth

CrazyJae

Lol

actually I'm more than happy to talk about it. Don't feel bad at all.

Oh, ok.

When I was a kid a few times I had an experience where it's like time slowed down around me (I'd hear things slowly, see things slowly, like I'm moving fast) and it was like there was a soap bubble around my head that represented sanity, and it was being pressed, like it might pop at any moment. That's my experience of "feels like you're losing your mind" and it was very unpleasant.

It's really interesting and I wish there were a way to compare our experiences but I think it's impossible. I find this stuff interesting though.

yeah. I like to clear misconceptions and spread more knowledge about it. For me it began small with delusions. That's when you think people are out to get you or you believe something irrational is happening. The auditory abd visual hallucinations came after, and they work with the delusions. But here's the scary part; when you feel like your losing your mind you feel like your brain is collapsing and what controls thoughts, emotions, feelings? Your brain. So it feels like your gonna slip into a coma.

Thanks for the description.

omega_supreme

I like chess because girls say I'm small and they reject me.

omega_supreme

Chess is an alternative to marriage.

CrazyJae

Chess is also an alternative for master bation

richb8888

not really that  takes first place

omega_supreme

With chess, you don't need a life.
