nah...an hour a day for a year, you can destroy weak IMs. Play for a few years more that that and GM is easy, like a college degree. You just have to show up.

nah. an hour a day for a year is all it should take. They say a lower level GM earns about $30,000 per year. Most people earn that right out of high school, so I figure the training required is probably on par. Maybe an extra year out of high school, since GM is harder to attain than IM. And most IMs earn about the same as high school graduates if they do nothing but chess, right?

Because if everyone was a Grandmaster then it would no longer be "grand" Wink

Because chess is a horrible way to make a living, but it's a nice leisure activity.  I play and learn to have fun, and when it seems like work, I cut back until it is fun.

I think there are some self-taught GMs over there. When we speak about having some talent I think it's maybe mostly having understanding to see the mistakes on own play and also be flexible. There is a need to teach own self and see what would be he direction to go, what should be practised. Sometimes I think that people are talking as chess talent would be some ability to absorb the patterns or just improve by playing. So I think there should be good skills on teaching chess to himself.

Because I'm not very good, but also because I think it would be a horrible job.  Imagine sitting down to play Carlsen, knowing you might be there for eight hours and are almost certain to lose.  Wretched business.

Skittles games on here though; great fun.

i have a friend who rating is 2100 he dosent even know oppening theory the reason he has a lot of xp but after 2000 you hardly advance since you get verry little points and the opponents are tougher so thats why becomeing a GM is hard you need talent+time in my country there 12 GMs

^This. But tied with that reason:
1. I didn't start at a young age.

2. I probably don't have the talent.

3. I don't like chess enough to dedicate my life to it.

Of course, the person in this thread who said it only takes an hour a day for a year, is either trolling or completely oblivious.

Or making obviously tongue-in-cheek comments?

I will say with all honesty, that i have invested WAY more money than i have ever won, and imp erfectly ok with that.  I just love the game, love to play, love to teach.  I get far more enjoyment out of going to a tournament, and seeing people i only see once or twice a year...making new chess friends...catching up with old ones.  For years i played for the money, rating, etc.  All it did was make me miserable.

Because I make $10,000 an hour milking hamsters and don't have that much time for chess.

Anyone of normal intellegence who puts in the time (and maybe gets a teacher) can become a strong club player.  People with high level titles, like IMs and GMs have tremendous natural talent as well.  Their brains just excell at certain metal tasks, such as pattern recognition and spacial relationships.  They probably have a very good visual memory as well.  Most people, even if they devoted themselves full time to the game, would not become GMs.

Personally, I have the natural chess talent of a blind water snake.  I spend time on chess becuase I find it mentally stimulting and I enjoy games.  Between work, family, and other interests my daily time is limited to a few tactical problems and a few online game moves.  I have no illusion I will be someday become "good" by objective standards, and I don't really care.  Chess is just recreation for me.

The rewards are not commensurate with the effort necessary.  On top of which, even those meager rewards are by no means certain.

Put the effort necessary to become a GM into almost any worthwhile endeavor, and a life of leisure is all but guaranteed.  Put it into chess, and you'll probably die miserable and a pauper, even if you "make it."  There's only room for so many WC candidates.

i'd be a grandmaster if my opponents stopped making the wrong moves.

well I started skiing at six, played icehockey at ten and did weightlifting from sixteen to eighteen. Afterwards I was parachuting from nineteen to twentyone and only then I've started to play chess at age 22. And now Iam 43 an looking forward to getting my pension lol

Avatar of NFork

Hehe, yes that's right. Becoming a FM is easy for anyone and it requires no talent, but becoming IM or GM asks superb brain with high intelligence on spatial abilities and memory :D

Because I only started seriously playing a few years ago, and only play in my spare time.  Plus I play for enjoyment of the game, and if I ever found chess being like a job then it would probably suck all the fun out of it.  I wish I could play chess at a GM level, and it'd be nice to have a title, but I don't forsee that happening.  Right now I'd be extremely happy to break a 2000 rating.
