I think that his opponents played very good chess for these two games.
Seriously, there does not always have to a background "reason" for these losses. If two highly skilled players, who are both well-prepared and in good shape, play a game of chess against each other, both are not going to win. I think it was just a matter of the moves that were played.

"just a matter of the moves that were played " correct ;Magnus played the bad moves and his opponents played the good moves. Magnus said after his loss to Caruana thast he wasn't feeling very well . The next day after his loss to Radjabov he said had no energy and it just wasn't working for him. These are extraneous factors and may have contributed to his losses.

Anyway, i reckon it was Carlsen's propensity to try out homemade wishy-washy openings that got him into trouble against the KID specialist Rajabovver. He's been in the wilderness having dropped nearly 100 rating points. Raja got his mojo going, seeing Magnus shooting himself in the foot with his Kingside pawn structure and used his experience of the KID to bring home the bacon. Raja may be on the comeback trail and Maggie may not have expected that. So there you go! Never count your chickens before they hatch.
So this was an unlucky 2-on-de-bounce for Mags.
