Why does EVERYONE play the Philidor Defense?

I play Italian game... but yeah. All the patzers at my level just want to catch you with the Fried Liver Attack, and don't know how to play the Giuoco Piano. I'm not like them though...

Guicco Piano pianissimo variation used to be my favourite and was on my repertoire until I explored more openings and changed my preferences.

Yeah I hear all that, but a lot of my games go like this and I have a huge winning record after Qxd4, like 90%. Far in excess of any other sequence I play regularly.

So true. This is probably a better question than the one I am asking tbh.grin.png

Maybe it has become popular thanks to Pepe Cuenca (chess24 commentator). Also Daniil Dubov has played it several times lately.

Because they are of the mistaken belief that it makes the pizza Hawaiian in origin. Pineapples are not native to the Hawaiian islands but never mind.

Most players choose the Philidor, because they dont know any Creative defenses, I personally think The Corn Stalk Defense is better than the Philidor.

Preston Ware played it with success, that is why it is also called the Ware defense.

My Opinion is that in Chess you have to find a devestating strategy to trick your opponent.

Half the time after they play e5 and I move Nf6, they play the Philidor Defense, at least people at my level do.

I think that GM Benjiman Finegold has something to do with this. (I he had a course or something, don't know the details) But they always play the same line and play the same general way.

There you go. Are there flaws in this rationale? Well yes, or this would be more mainstream higher up. But I remember these basic ideas when I played around that level. I used them myself.

I played a Clubmatch last year for my Team, and I had the Black Pieces, my Opponent played 1.e4, and I sat there for about 30 seconds , I pretended to play 1.c5 , but before I touched the pawn went for aquick 1.a5

What a stunner

Devastating strategy.

Nc6 is a great defense. The Ruy Lopez shouldn't be feared (well, maybe a little.)

Yes but 5.Nxe5 is a blunder so don't do that!

You asked why they played it. That's what my answer was written for. Like I said before, the reasoning has flaws. It's one reason why they are 1200s and not higher.

A question I have is why do most people play 4.Nxd4 instead of 4.Qxd4? In my experience anyway, Qxd4 seems stacks better.

Yes. That is what  I use. Most people fall for a trap that wins you at least 2 pawns.

Well, I’ve never put pineapple on pizza and I’ve never willingly played the Philidor. I have mouse-slipped it a couple of times and I have accidentally eaten pineapple on pizza.

Hey Winawar, there are photos of Winawar... and poisoned pawns.

I love the sweet that pineapple adds to pepperoni and sausage pizza!  I said sausage. I wonder if Igor will reappear?

You must be punished, for this means you have stopped playing the bongcloud.

I have only played Philidor in thematic tournaments here just to broaden my horizons. I don't think I would choose it voluntarily. What's the appeal? Maybe I was doing it wrong but it just seems that you get a cramped but solid position with black and then have to slowly and painstakingly expand if you can. Other choices give more options IMO.
