Why does EVERYONE play the Philidor Defense?

dont play it! If you queenside castle and a race variation, white's the one blowing the punches and having fun, black just defending! I suggest you to look into e5 theory which is considered a good opening.

I'm not saying I will play it, because I won't unless my style changes and I want to spend a couple hours learning it. I'm not saying it is bad and it is DEFINETALLY underrated.

Every Opening and defense has been analysed, since the times of Steinitz, and the Philidor is not bad but it's rarely played at the top level.

Any Chess player should know that White has 20 choices to Open a Game with, some good some bad and some unpopular moves are on the rise.Best response to 1.e4 was 1.c5 from blacks side if I'm correct.

But you have 19 other moves to choose from.

My thoughts are that beginners play the Philidor to protect the pawn on e5 not realizing that its a move that can get black in trouble.

Anyone who plays against stockfish level 6 will know it plays the Philidor sometimes, but it can be beaten easily.

I can’t remember anyone ever playing the Philidor against me, so, of course, the new daily game I just accepted, my opponent plays the Philidor. I guess it’s time to learn the Philidor.

It is not bad. I'm not saying it's bad. Maybe it is inferior slightly, but if you study it it can be good if you know a lot about it. It's not the damiano defense.

its super solid and like the Caro-Kahn its an opening that provokes impatience and overextension in trying to prove an advantage. Even strong players that know that white's advantage is not that big, its frustrating watching your opponent play some many passive moves and be ok.

but Black must also know what to do, its not quite a system and he must pay attention to how white is regrouping his pieces, or he will get blown off the board thinking his bunker is safe.

Stockfish level 7 also plays it against 1.e4 sometimes and it usually wins

Well, Bg4 wasn’t covered, but it is going okay.

Maybe is more played thanks to Pepe Cuenca (chess24 commentator). Also Daniil Dubov has played it several times, including games vs Carlsen.

CoolPineAppleMan

I don't see anyone playing it tbh

AussieMatey

My mate Phil E Door plays it - he reckons it's a banging good defence, but I can't get a handle on it.

Half the time after they play e5 and I move Nf6, they play the Philidor Defense, at least people at my level do.

I think that GM Benjiman Finegold has something to do with this. (I he had a course or something, don't know the details) But they always play the same line and play the same general way.

well they obviously don't know how to play the philidor.

Yeah I hear all that, but a lot of my games go like this and I have a huge winning record after Qxd4, like 90%. Far in excess of any other sequence I play regularly.

Bg5 isnt that great...

Carwasher_Superdrunk

I have no clue what you are talking about; I routinely play 1.e4 and almost never see the Philadore. By far the most common response is the Sicilian.

krazeechess

You are joking right? Philidor is definitely inferior. Its not losing, just inferior.

Yeah, obviously not if black plays 7.Be7 instead of 7.Nf6 which was the line I posted...Probably can get away with Qxg7 after 7.Be7 no?

I just played ANOTHER Philidor game. LOOK AT THIS GARBAGE!

You go Bg5 before Nc3.

when someone develops three pieces, and undevelops or trades them all off, then proceeds to play only pawn moves, they will lose regardless of what opening they play.
