Why does FIDE have anti-doping regulations?

It's not like you can take steroids and become better at chess. Yet they have them:http://www.fide.com/fide/fide-anti-doping-regulations.html

KirbyCake

you can take drugs and become smarter, no doubt about that.

baddogno

They have fantasies of chess someday being included in the Olympics, which does require testing.

Sounds interesting. What drugs have said effect?

pilotk9

Adderall could help a lot im sure.

Chicken_Monster

adderall is weak. there are highly illegal amphetamines that they probably want to prohibit.

Chicken_Monster

Ask the Breaking Bad Group. Also, I think OJ should be outlawed. Not the football player.

They should put Monopoly and checkers in the Olympics too. Poker as well.

I already forgot the whole point of this thread. I'll see my doctor about that pill.

There is a move called, I want to say, LIMITLESS...something like that..Bradley Cooper stars....he takes a pill that give him a four-digit IQ. Good movie.

Battlehammer

Methamphetamine (speed)

In low doses, methamphetamine can cause an elevated mood and increase alertness, concentration, and energy .

Amphetamine (bennies)

At therapeutic doses, causes emotional and cognitive effects such as euphoria, change in libido, increased wakefulness, and improved cognitive control. It induces physical effects such as decreased reaction time, fatigue resistance, and increased muscle strength.

Both drugs are illegal without prescription and can greatly improve your chess game, but...BUT...both are very addictive and can be said, equivalent to you burning your candle of life at both ends.

Chicken_Monster

Most people take that stuff to improve their chess . lol.

You just figured out what Carlsen puts in that orange drink.

As someone working since 28 years in psychiatry and having studied psychology my knowledge about these and similar drugs is: - cognitive functions get better in cases of mental illnesses when the right individual dosis is found. This is also the case for neuroleptic medication, which nobody sane takes for getting better at chess or elsewhere. - users believe to have better performances. The reason lies in the red sunglasses those drugs can give to perception (being less on earth) and the depressive mood after the disappearing of the mood lifting effects. Research shows broadly no real better performance. The idea of taking drugs for better performance is self-cheating.

Basically, I'll try to explain that to everyone in layman's ters. Some people (they may have bipolar disorder, dissociative disorder, etc.) take the drug and stay up all night studying and it improves performance on their exams. Their home is really clean too, afterward. A mentally normal person who has not manifested these disorders should NOT touch that crud ever in order to attempt to duplicate those effects that may have been benefition in others. It likely not be beneficial.
