Why does nobody say 'good game' anymore?

It's very few players that say 'good game' after a game.

Online or over the board?

Because is old-fashioned

Online. Hardly anyone seems to say 'good game'. Over the board people generally shake hands (pre Covid!), so why not say 'good game'. I joined this website years ago and then didn't play for years, but I have a feeling that when I first joined that most people said 'gg' after the game and now it seems rare. It's not a big deal, but I think it's a nice custom

I usually say Go dott your i's and if you cross my Queen, watch out!

Laskersnephew

I've just gotten out of the habit. For one thing, it seems that a lot of the time, when you type "GG" you find that you are typing into the void, because your opponent is already gone! Another thing is that playing against an unknown username, a person you never see or meet,  feels a lot like playing a computer, and why say "GG" to a computer or video game?

Godott

I can understand that for blitz and bullet games, where people quickly move on to the next one. However, I usually play 20/20. I think if you've played a game for 30/40 mins or longer, then you can say 'gg'. Like I say, it's not a big thing but it might be a nice custom to revive, especially for the longer games.

Laskersnephew

I almost alway do say it after a longer game. but I no longer feel slighted when my opponent says nothing in reply or exits even before I type it. It's just the custom of the country, so why let it bother you?

Possibly because you play very few good games? Jokes, jokes, jokes 😁

Because Internet has killed education

I don't even pay attention to the messaging since I'm looking at the chess board.

I'm too used to my opponents trash talking when they lose, so, i prefer to move on to my next game rather than that.

JackRoach

'cause it's awkward when you trash-talk your opponent the whole time and, regardless of winning or losing, you write "gg."

Kidding, I don't trash my opponents unless they trashtalk me.

mrnipplepinch

I don't really ever type. so I end up forgetting by endgame to say GG

It was a bad habit, better that it stopped. If you lose, of course you didn’t enjoy and you played bad, nothing is good here. If you win, it means your opponent had mistakes and if you say good game, it’s like you are mocking him. If ends in draw, either it was a boring game which of course you cannot call it a good game or it was a game with a lot of up and down, that means it was fist of blunders. Not good for anyone 😀 chess is only good for the winner, that’s all.

Maybe it wasn’t a good game?

Everyone complained about all the people saying "good game" regardless of the quality of play.
