This is why soceiy hates chess.
Why does society hate chess?
I didn't intend to disturb any domestic argument... Why don't you simply love each other and make things easy folks
that is exactly what I said Colin, but my attempts at love and kindness was first ignored and then spat on by Fivewords then before it got resolved Juice911 started talking about rap.Which Is why I said what I said in 147. There is just no respect.
Personally, and this is not an attack as I play chess (and even run a club), but I have found that while there are many chess players that are kind people, there seems to be a higher % of elitists, snobs, and jerks among chess players than the general community - but that is purely personal observation and experience, and could obviously change depending on your own community. In particular, Class Players, especiall 1600+ tend to mock blunders and strategem of players they perceive as weaker (unless brand new to chess - but anyone that has been playing for 6-12 months+ is fair game). Interestingly, expert players and masters (2k+), while I have no idea what their private thoughts are, are at least on the surface much more humble even though they have more reason to be arrogant. I have seen many new players walk away from playing the game live and only play online because they couldn't stand the chess community, even if they liked the game.
Experts and masters are more humble because they are not as ignorant. They have probably played a few IMs and GMs, which is probably humbling.
There are a lot of class players with phenomenal calculating abilities. A master is a master because he or she put in the work and not because of some inherent superiority, and they know this. Yet there are a lot of class players that have their head up their anus, believing they are inherently superior.
I used to know a couple expert players who were experts in high school. They were attending a university on chess scholarships. Basically, they were just punching bags for student/immigrant/GMs - also on scholarship.
1600-1800 players don't get that opportunity and they don't know what's up.
I played a chess master in an open tournament 1 time and 1 time only. I was screwed in the opening. He played an obscure variation against my Dragon. After the game, I realized this man couldn't out calculate me, yet I still totally got my ass kicked. He just knew too much about the endgame and too much about openings ... if I had played that guy another 100 times, I might have lost all 100.
A class player is a class player because he or she has entirely too many Grand Canyon sized holes in their game. It's beyond me how they can be so arrogant.
I'm a class player, but my head isn't so far up one hole (my butt) that I can't see the rest of the holes ...
what I read was " experts and masters....isn't so far up one hole ( my butt) that I can't see the rest of the holes..."
It is Saturday man ,keep it short please.
This thread is the best entertainment I've had in a while. I long ago forgot the original topic but it didn't matter a bit.
There's a positive, uplifting song that sums up what rap is, and spells out a lot of what has been written here.
C-Rap by Eddie Rabbitt.
lots of issues - post number two hit a good amount of it - but also, a lot of players that are chess players are really horrendous people to be around - they have a talent that cant be ignored, but thats just how it is - people arent going to like people like that, and if that type of person is in a group of non-players, he'll likely be laughed at (even among some players who are 'normal') - if in theory those types of folks werent around, and people tended to meet cool chess players, then it would be diff - i get the feeling that chess is more encouraged in other countries - garry kasparov said i think that chess will thrive in areas where it is held in high regard in society
god I hate that little yellow face thing. Is it like canned laughter in the sitcoms? Something unfunny or sarcastic is said then an emoticon is added to reassure you that it was in fact probably not that funny but possibly sarcastic and that you should share this luke warm experience with its mid tone grey author.
Is this some sort of get out of jail free card for everybody who has nothing constructive to say?
For those who dream of living in a past age...chances are, that those who actually did "live" during said time who gladly have traded all to live in the present age...bidding good riddence to the wretched past.Prior to the modern era,the best,short-description of life in the past (say,4000bc--1900 ad) was "brief, violent, painful".For centuries at a time ,life for the common folk of the western world hardly changed at all,and most of the time it was uniformly a hard exsistance. The past is another country...nice to vist, dreadful to stay.
Noticing that poetry has been at low ebb for some decades is not the same as wishing to live pre-1900.
badger_song sounds like the poets I've been talking to on and off since the eighties.
thanks for all the emoticons....right on queue ,I should get a Nobel Prize for my astounding ability to manipulate human behavioural response triggers. But alas I am so far ahead in my field it will take decades before I am appreciated.
I still don't understand why you won't befriend me fivewords ,I am the most honest unpleasant person you will ever meet.
ummm...guys...remember Pavlov? I don't really hate the emoticon thing, adding 4 to everything you say is not upsetting me. One or two will do just fine. See it was kinda more to see who would take the bait.
This is what I was trying to say with the Nobel Prize thing .it is weird having to explain this, I thought chess makes you more intelligent ?

Poetry is glorified rap.
*hides in corner*
Poetry is glorified rap? WTF? You got it ass backwards! Rap is glorified (and shitty) poetry!
