Why does this site function so badly?

From my experience, the reliability of Live Chess is much better now than it was a couple of years ago. I have hardly any connection interruptions.

Actually, I have however noticed a lot of people from Germany complaining recently, maybe this is something the site should look into.

I'm sure the German people are a fine race, and do not need "looking into".

Browser and plugin updates are likely candidates for "glitches". Firefox for instance has been updating daily/weekly in recent months.

I hope this was an ironic comment of some sort, because I honestly have noticed a lot of Germans having connection problems in the past week, so I believe there may be something going wrong there!

However: All updates installed, firewall and scanner down, all other major websites on the planet work pretty fast as before (15K DSL) - live.chess.com is the only delaying webise.

Its not Java, its not the connection and its not the amount of browser windows opened.

Last week, the problem was only temporary, since Sandy, the complete live section seems to be mixed up.

Any other idea?

I was having some problems with this site in the past but I found that by changing the mouse and keyboard my problems went away. Apparently using a cheap mouse and keyboard will mess up your computer, it is best to use good components in your computer. I have also found that when problems continue to occur turning off the anti-virus program helps and running a proram such as Windows Cleaner also helps. And don't forget to defragment your hard drive from time to time.  Don't know if any of these ideas will help anyone but if your having problems you could give them a try.

Mouse and keyboard are logitech and razor gamer standard for PVP. This should be fine.

I uninstalled Java completely, rebooted, installed Java from scratch and now get the error message:

Live Chess Server is currently unavailable

Firefox, Opera and IE tested.

http://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/cannot-access-live-server

More threads started by Germans in the last 48 hours complaining they can't access Live Chess. I honestly think there is a pattern here.

Well, I started playing today and had a winning streak of around ten games in a row. I Lwouldn't mind having it broken because someone beat me, but to have it broken because Chess.com disfavors players who haven't paid is harder to accept.

Unfortunately, that doesn't make me likely to pay in the future, but much more likely to leave the site and discourage friends from using it. This is not how a site should work.

Here is the blackmailer! Seriously, I only here baby's talk like that, stop whining, and start enjoying this awesome site! Your little threat about leaving the site is just a laugh, one non paying member leaving wouldn't be a problem at all

There are a lot of things about this site that are awful.  At the top of the list are the time lags which seem to happen mostly to non-payers, 'premove' option (which is illegal since computer chess rules are supposed to mirror otb rules... in other words, why is my opponent 'touching' pieces when it isn't his turn?), and unrealistic rating system.  Ultimately, the problem is that there aren't enough chess clubs.  OTB chess is real chess, live, and much better for many reasons.  Online 'chess' is a sad second alternative just to save some gas....  we need to get back to real chess, with real rules that are enforced  consistently, with players whose primary goal is not to win games at any cost so they can get a few worthless rating points.

your opponent is'nt touching pieces....two, premoves work only if your opponent makes each move---if u make 3 premoves and he makes the first move only u will be faced w/ a new second move. For one who dis-likes online
u do alot of complaining ONLINE !

Deleted all cookies, the new browser bar, made a deep virus scan, checked internet configuration, deleted temp folders, but no connection possible.

Folks, this is rubbish.Working 4 hours this sunday to play on a bad connections website where I payed for and still can not access it.

No matter if I am paying or not, this is not professional.

Guys, don't give the obviously silly post attention.

If they got rid of that stupid Meebo thing this site would function much better. I've seen it around on other sites as well, don't even know what it does, but it is an annoyance.

Avatar of kohai

Meebo isn't on live chess, just the main site area.

You can turn off chat completely in your  Privacy section (Account)

http://www.chess.com/home/privacy.html

Where it says "Chat Bar", use the drop down box and mark as "Never Show" then save settings at the bottom of the page.

For those suffering disconnects (not lag):

What is the average time of disconnect (how long does the message dialog stay on the screen)? Is it a few seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds or even more?

And how often does it happen for you?

Are you using wifi?

A proxy server?

Anonymous surfing?

Do you roughly what day/time this happened? (so we can check logs)

Did you lose connection completely or just to live chess?

Honestly I pay the subscription only for the videos and the forum. For play other servers are way faster

When the site functions it does so well & is still a great-platform for playing online-chess. Member-interaction is superior to any other provider.

What is "Java"?  Does the site even use Java?  I thought it was flash based.

Java uninstalls very poorly.

Are left relying on future-updates to resolve errors (Java.com support are no help whatsover) or use more specialist uninstaller for java.

Chrome I believe requires neither java nor flash except for the versions already incorporated in the browser to (ie: not on your pc!) in order to run chess.com.
