Why don't most people like talking in chat?

Some people that I have played on Chess.com are really nice people, and I got to know them because of chat, so why isn't it used more often?

Yeah, I guess thats true. But the chat rules do say no hurtful text or profanity.

Some people just want to focus on the game. Some do not understand English. I have seen messages in languages I don't understand, how do I reply such in a blitz game.

Yes, all the above and probably many others, I think you just have to accept it, as it is their right not to chat if they dont want to happy.png

There is a chat facility here, for those who want to do so.

No need for facebook

Most chess players play chess.

Just played on my iPad again. Chatting is not possible in the app.

I like chatting

Because very little of the conversations relate to the game or chess in general. The world chess championship is upon us and look at how many threads are currently talking about it. If Magnus isn’t playing, it seems relatively few care that much about it.

Oh ?

nobody wants to chat

You have asked everyone about this then ? I think not

I am always happy to do so

Please just speak for yourself, you certainly do not speak for me

What do you want to chat about? The weather?

I used to play chess over the board in tournaments etc, it was silent, no words, if an opponent tried to make any type of connection with me while playing trying to make me answer some question or react to something I would ghost them 100%, after the game was through I could talk to them but not during.

That is because usually people just want to distract you and make you lose focus, it's considered poor sportsmanship to talk to your opponent during the game, not in a friendly game between friends but if it's more serious than that.

And to be honest there really isn't anything to talk about during a match, I'm gonna talk about how I blundered that piece? Okey well maybe it was just a sacrifice and then because I talk about it as a blunder you think that it's for real, you take it and I go for my plan and win, etc.

Talk before or after but not during, in my opinion.

Nowadays I see more and more of these street players who want to talk and taunt throughout the game and I'm not for it at all.

I think it is fine to say "good luck" at the start of a game, and perhaps a few words at the end of a fun game. But we are here to play chess, and chatting is a distraction.

It is used more often with friends I'd say. Rated games it is usually not appropriate to be chatting (both sides should focus on the game and not distract each other with chatting) and some people just use the in-game chat to trash-talk.

I also believe chess.com has many friendly members, but this doesn't mean they want to be typing when they should be playing chess. Unrated games I chat with my friends a decent amount and I like having the option of chat (even in rated games) if the situation calls for it and the comment is appropriate to the situation.

I've also noticed that friendly chatting is more common in longer time controls for obvious reasons.
