Why don't YOU play longer time controls?
This, in turn, describes my ideal approach pretty well! I often go into the tank when I feel I could decide the game by a direct attack, though... and then it turns out I don't quite have it, so even though I might already have a superior position, I get into time trouble and then lose by blundering. I feel like I just lack brain power, compared to what I was like a few years ago.
"Why spend an hour or two on a single loss, if you can play 4-6 games in the same time frame and win at least one on average?"
You said it. If I lose a speed game, it didn't take too long and I can start a new one. It sucks to spend half an hour on a slow game and lose after all of that time and energy.
Besides, your opponent is more likely to use an engine on a long game than in a speed game.
so what, i play regularly in rapid, if I lose, i learn from it, and play a different time control, then play another game of rapid. even if i play a cheater (which is really common) my points will be refunded. Usually it's pretty easy to tell if someone is cheating, spending 10-20 sec per move, just joined lately, having high accuracies etc.
usually if you play longer time controls, you don't tend to easily make errors. Even if you do, you can still learn something from it.
Even if no cheaters online I would hardly play rapid, reason is my eyes get tired. I have no problem playing long time controls otb (laughs painfully in 100+30)
Cheaters.
If there were no cheaters I'd play long time controls online. That's my only reason.
I hate it when people cheat

That’s one positive thing about it I guess

Only the most obvious cheaters are caught... but the types of cheating that are going on gets into speculation / paranoia on my part.
My own reason is that if I play for too long, I start caring for the result too much.
I'm perhaps the opposite. I stop caring before 5 mins have elapsed.

Yes I have seen people who were banned for cheating after being on the site for 5+ years
I play 30|0 a lot and it is my favorite time control.
More or less the reasons I play fast time controls have been listed out - inability to keep my hands still, ability to play etc. But there is another reason which has not been listed. For a person like me who is preoccupied with my job, I find it difficult to spare time for longer games. I treat bullet games as stress relievers when the pandemic began last year.
Unfortunately, that was months ago, and I have since stopped playing all formats of games (at least for now). I only play longer controls at my local chess club, which was at least the case before it was closed off temporarily due to the pandemic.
Depends,

That makes sense. I don’t have a job as I’m still a kid so I have all the time in the world to play longer time controls. Though I would love to play some OTB chess at a club even if it was shorter time controls.
My own reason is that if I play for too long, I start caring for the result too much.
Sure, standard controls would give me more time to think, but if I thought everything through and still ended up losing (and I don't have too much time for chess as it is), then that would really feel like a waste of time. Why spend an hour or two on a single loss, if you can play 4-6 games in the same time frame and win at least one on average? Increased returns? As a casual player, I'm a bit skeptical.
