Why has Magnus lost his mojo ?

I felt sorry for Magnus at today's press conference when he said that he had no energy and that it just isn't working for him at the moment. What was surprising about his loss today was that he had the whites pieces and he castled queenside against the kings indian defence. Thus inviting the threats on the long diagonal.

Perhaps Magnus has reached that age... 23/24/25 when he is becoming aware of his own mortality and he is thinking once again about carving out a legacy which shows that Magnus is more than just the ultimate positional player. I think he will have to revert to a more solid style; solid play is how he wins but Magnus may have other ideas .

The question for Magnus :"Are you going to take the green pill or the red pill ? ".

Carlsen is probably distracted because principal photography began this week on the upcoming Terminator film with Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Magnus has a role he's shooting as John Connor's lieutenant and best friend in New Orleans.

He is understandably nervous as all heck since this is Carlsen's first film, ever...and it's a huge one.

DAILYWATERSITTING

what the hell are you talkin about?!? Stupidity at its best.

Of course, nobody has energy after a loss. I wonder what will happen next.

TheRocketKing

I know the REASON, he is dating a girl! Certainly a recipe for a disaster, imo! Ok, he won against mahmedaryov and nakamura but they seem to be not playing well most of the times with black.

I don't think we should over-think this. Magnus is the best, but like all greats he's going to lose some games. No champ has ever been so far ahead he never lost a few games.

Another note, Magnus is playing some of the worlds best. Day after day. These are not your typical GM's. People have bad days. Bad weeks even. Chess has a lot to do with attitude. I think the greatest players are where they are because they have the right attitude. An unwillingness to die and the ability to focus. Sometimes all the mental energy just isn't there. Magnus started great and I bet he finishes just as strong. He's young too so he has plenty of room to grow.

Crazyim5, Isner-Mahut was almost literally a 5-day long game. ;)

Scottrf

Overreaction much?

It's two games not the end of his career.

Scottrf

Boy more likely.

cornbeefhashvili

Still, he's probably getting laid.

Because Dr Evil stole his Mojo?

I think people are just gholish, as Svidler said. Don't forget, Magnus won couple of really splendid games and nearly defeated Karjakin no more than 3 days ago. Winning and losing is part of any sport and it applies to chess as well. I also want to point out that the schedule of 5 back to back games is a bit cruel on the players. Imagine a tennis player playing continously for 5 days!

Every cricket test match is played over the course of 5 continous days.

Chess isn't a physical activity. Half the world does mental work 5 days in a row.

Senator-Blutarsky

Magnis has taken 2 piledrivers 2 days in a row. He's been hit. Getting back up is up to him.

johnyoudell

His opponents have played well.

Good test of the young man. Will he come out fighting after the rest day or play safe for a while?

If you equate chess with a regular non-physical job, you clearly dont respect how difficult an all day game can be. All day chess tourneys are almost the most exhusting expericences of my life.

Scottrf

You need to get out more then.

Senator-Blutarsky

Not like Scotty to call Magnus an ass bandit.

samtoyousir

Lol! I kinda figured you would say that. XD Believe me! I get out a lot. I'm a student, and I refferee soccer, my job is running. All day aderline at chess is much worse.

Maybe chess exhuasts people at different rates?

Scottrf

Na im just trolling.
