Why I took up chess

I took up chess because of following.

I have 10-8 in the big blind.  Middle position player calls, all elese fold, I check.  Flop is heads-up.  10-8-10.  BINGO!!! Right?  Wrong.

Turn card is Q.  All the money goes in.  River is Q.  Opponent turns up Q-8.

Same crap time after time.

I've yet to see a player have a miracle piece fall onto the chess board to save him when he is dead to rights.

Rofl, i feel for you mate. I've had the same sort of thing many times with poker and decided to spend less time online playing poker and more time playing chess. Now i love chess so much (just like years ago) that i don't even think of playing poker anymore.

Besides, chess is better for one in many ways. It trains the brain, it's relaxing and there's no risk of losing money :)

I'm starting to feel like as soon as I get wired Kings I'm a dead man standing -- I think I've yet to take a pot down with them.

On the board?  I think a pair of kings would be unbeatable....

I just started learning chess about 6 weeks ago.  So, I'm in the transition phase.   But in the few weeks I've been exposed chess, I really enjoy it so far.  I really like the fact that there is so much information available on the subject.  I just need to get up the guts to stop reading, and start playing.  In poker terms, I'm a fish right now at chess.  I did play one game and won, but that was more beginners luck than anything else.

Well, the bottom line is that chess is a complete information game -- poker is not.  If it's the uncertainty that's got you sour on poker, chess may well be your game.

That being said, there is depth in this game that can keep you learning for the rest of your life -- mastery will not come easily, and may not come at all.  Focus on enjoying the journey and I suspect you'll find the same love for the game that many others here have found.

The issue is, I've been playing online poker about 12 hours a day for the past 6 or so years.  It's like anything else, when you have to do it, you seem to lose the passion.  I don't have to play chess, so I guess that's why I enjoy now.  Poker for me has become 2nd nature.  Put the money in when you have an edge, see if it plays out.  No real challenge.  The challenge is accepting the fact that the math doesn't always hold up.  Maybe I just need a break from it.  Anyhow, I'll see if can at least learn chess to the point where I can give people a good game.  Also, maybe stimulate my brain a little.

In chess you are the only master of your destiny,

     good or bad.

I guess I'm getting away from my original point.  Chess is decided by skill not luck.  That is what drew me to it.

No, twice as easy go get mated! And even a pair of queens doesn't always take the biscuit.

This is slightly uncanny. I took up online poker several months ago and won a bit, but recently had a really bad run of losses. Since then I've rediscovered this site and consider chess as much more worthwhile pastime. I'll run through a list of reasons:

1. It's free. Or at the very least, if you're a premium member you actually get an improved service.

2. The whole luck/skill thing. Seeing AA busted on the river never made for a fun evening in. With chess, it's all down to you.

3. There is a big difference in the whole ethos. Poker sites seem to manipulate many into wasting their time and money whilst only enriching a lucky (and admittedly skillful) few. The whole culture of chasing personal gain seems wrong and much less valuable than simply enjoying a pastime or hobby. There is no community spirit, as there is here.

Admittedly though, I'm coming at this from a fairly biased angle so what do y'all think?

Years ago, good poker players came out on top in the long run.  These days, the good players have to fight the short term luck of the bad players.  Seems like you used to be be able to control your own destiny.  Not anymore.

Like I said originally, I've haven't seen a miracle chess piece fall from the sky to bail out a bad player.

There is actually luck involved in Chess, but not to nearly the same extent as Poker.  Sometimes in Chess (by luck) the move you made might be far better than you though it would be.

I think there is a false hope for Poker players that somehow they could make money and that skill is the main requirement.  I would advise such hopefulls (from personal experiences) that Poker is a game of skill AND luck, and no matter how skillful you are there is a very high chance of losing to luck.  For these reasons I suggest playing for fun alone!

In that case wouldn't you "decide" to win every game.

is there any game that doesn't rely on some amount of luck?
