Why is Chess.com growing so quickly?

digitally, how many people do you see playing chess on their un-smartphones?  How many people are chatting about chess daily?  where?  why isn't chess trending on social media?  it's not.... nowhere.

Yeah, I also almost never saw people play (mobile) games in university or at work. Especially any Genshin Impact, Fortnite, WoW Classic, Wordfeud etc. Only can remember one dude playing Fire Emblem, which would really fun if I only could remove all timed gatcha and questionable clothing. So either people don't do those thing and the whole debate about addiction and gamling in kids games is just a distraction artificially created from those who control us in the shadows (my bet is stil on intergalactic lizard people, the fact that nobody talks about them anymore is an obvious telltale) or maybe people are good at separating their time and hobbies?

After all, if I want to talk about chess... I would do it here, with other people who play chess. And since chess.com grow, this shows that there are people interested and who found the platform for their interest.

And GothamChess is a great example of what popular chess streamers look like and what most people want: simple entertainment of laughing at stupid moves other noobs do, packaged in an intellectual frosting of "chess knowledge".

Also, good one about intelligent chess players solving world problems. Most can hardly understand why people don't like to play at their club when they play on their mobiles (while sitting in the class, on toilet break at work or inbetween scrolling at midnight).

is Chess.com's userbase really growing?

What answer are you looking for? It seems more that this thread is intended for you to rebuke any thesis that is put up, so instead how about you just tell us the answer.

what thesis has been presented?

can you identify the reason why the daily user numbers are up so much over such a short period of time without anything happening in the world of chess?

Ever wonder why you're a 700 level chess player?

again...  has interest in chess really risen as of late?  show us...

what exactly is increasing interest in chess at this very moment...  where is the worldwide appeal of chess?????  nowhere.  nothing.  not a damn thing is happening.  no one is talking about it except us here or even narrower... me.  I look at the topics on this forum and the traffic is paltry

there is no increase in user discussions or activity in the forums.  could be because the mods are so draconian in censoring the topics and locking what they find objectionable from a arbitrary perspective...  but really, look at these forums.  hardly any activity.

with such a supposed increase in chess user daily numbers, wouldn't you think there would be these huge discussions online?  nothing.  look at the boring topics.  My thread is very recent but look at how it out paces the other topics because no one else is talking about this.

everything else is mindless junk on the forums.  oh... how to i stay above 1100... who cares.  1100 sucks.  oh what openings are best?  really?  thats worthless.  who cares about openings if you have no skill throughout.  oh magnus is playing so and so... who cares. Magnus is an example of quitting chess... that's not the type of champion we want.  and many of the past champions we weirdos and had psychological problems so not exactly stellar examples for us.  in fact, I retract my previous statement about Magnus... he is more normal than a lot of past champions, but dropping out of a tournament because he suspects that his opponent was...  yeah...  can't prove it, but let's just accuse someone of it and chess.com comes out and says yeah.. Hans this and Hans that... but really???

Short form social media over various platforms, mainstream stuff like queens gambit, crossover interest in chess streamers because of high volume streamers from other genres doing pogchamps and other chess stuff, people being locked in due to covid and expanding their interest base out of sheer bordom..... there are plenty of answers of why interest in chess is up. Lots of people are getting exposed to chess itself and chess related entertainment and sticking around. I read countless comments on chess videos about people who were just passers by to Youtube streams, and found the streamers captivating enough to keep watching and to start playing anew or reigniting a past hobby. So Chess.com, being the largest and most heavily advertised site will get the windfall from this. Is there some chess.com conspiracy to falsify numbers? I highly doubt they would burden their servers with the extra duties which have actually crashed their site lately.

Because speed chess is not my thing but it was perfect when trying to climb the leagues. Quantity > quality in that case. My classic and daily numbers are better since I actually take those game more seriously than moving horses as fast as possible (yes, that was a much better strategy for bullet than trying to actually play chess).

But at the end of the day it isn't hard to get better at chess, the real question is why should I put in the effort? A game is still a game, no matter how often someone talk about all the problems which could be solved by genius chess players but never are.

Deadmanparty

Chess is not gaining popularity.  I do not see any push for chess in real life at all.

What is real life? So, are the millions of subscribers to chess youtube channels not existing in real life? Chess is one of many many many niche groups that get little to no mainstream exposure, but that does not mean that they are not gaining popularity. For comparison, is there a push for traditional popular stuff in real life by the average person? Like, the NFL could be an example of a super popular thing, but I don't feel anyone at work pushing that any more than I do chess. Things at varying levels of worldwide interest are going to be pushed at different levels by advertisers only if they think they can derive value out of it.

LOL... you're daily numbers are higher?????  so you're telling me that games when you have an entire day to think about a single move is higher and you think that's a good thing?!

That's what's wrong with chess right now... everyone is playing participation trophy chess  none of these types are any good at chess

Even with an entire day to make a single move, they will be 1200 level.  can chess.com be honest to these types and explain that maybe they need to try something different?

something is wrong here when someone like this is arguing that daily numbers on chess.com are rising for some unknown reason but that the numbers are legit.  maybe these are just plant types on the forums who harp a line of thinking.

show us the real players on this site who believe that something is not very wrong here

Deadmanparty

This is a chess site.  This is not chess.  I would not be surprised if many of the new accounts are fake.

that is a true statement...  there is no push... so how can chess.com numbers for daily user activity be rising so much if there is no real push behind chess?

notice that everyone is citing Gotham Chess, but has anyone really questioned Levy's numbers...  speaking of which...  why don't we call him out on it.  let's tell Levy to prove that his numbers are legit and lets call on YouTube and the other so called platforms to disclose the amount of fake activity occurring on their sites with regard to subscriber numbers and fake accounts being generated on YouTube.  Because then the numbers are meaningless on YouTube.  Anyone can generate subscriptions if they are not real people right?  its happened before.  so prove that its not happening now on YouTube Levy because chess is not growing at all

Everyone says chess is growing in interest and popularity but its not.  its really not.  look around you.  look online.  its not mainstream.  no one is celebrating chess.  heck no one even knows the top 10 players worldwide.  nothing.  there is nothing to support the rise in user daily activity.  so what is really driving this so called growth?????

I would say that there is some computer mayhem going on at this site. I've been a member since it's inaugural year, and only this last year I have been getting constant friend requests from users I have had absolutely NO interaction with. So fake accounts are definitely a problem that needs looked into. \

Hi all,

I am new to Chess.com, and I am surprised how well it is run, and how much fun it is. I played a lot of chess in high school in the 1980s, and now I am just stumbling back in. I am at a lower level now, but chess.com works for anyone.

I as well as many others online wish that we could filter out these newly created accounts on chess.com

They should have to play online for at least 3 months at the lower levels before playing anyone rated above 2100

This has gotten completely pointless. The company couldn’t exaggerate membership revenue if it wanted to, and that’s the basis of valuation any investor would use if it intended to continue it as a sales of service business. A huge number of nonpaying members have no value, and increase the cost of service.
They would be of interest to an investor intending to sell advertising, but it would have to factor loss of good will. I, for example, am very satisfied to pay $119/year, but would not endure ads.
Anyhow, simmer down. It ain’t a war.
