Chess is form of dialog, it teaches you how important is understanding of thinks you are looking on.

Hmm I guess so but it takes so much time!

Chess is a cheap way to escape boredom. Other games are effective for a short period of time only.

I can't speak for others but chess literally saved my life.

3 months ago it was in the playground that I spent most of my days. Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool and all, shooting some b ball outside of the school. When a couple of guys who were upto no good. Well lets just say they started making trouble in my neighbourhood and I ended up getting into a fight.

Walking back from the schools nurses office after getting a cut above my eyebrow patched up I walked past a classroom that had it's door open and just happened to briefly look in. It was a room full of chess boards and the sounds of clocks being hit and pieces being slammed down. I don't know what made me do it - but I entered that room and I honestly believe doing so saved me from the gang culture that surrounded me. I think if I hadn't got into that fight I would never have discovered chess and would probably have ended up shot or in jail.

chess helped me because i don't fit in at school, i'm not into the terrible internet jokes that people quote very five seconds and the more fights you get into and win the more 'cool' you are. i don't like that stuff.

chess gave me something to focus on and ignoring everyone else easier.

Please folks, find reasons that chess is important, like it's entertainment that keeps your brain sharp, but do not make it your entire life, especially if you're young and especially if it's Internet Chess.  You need to engage in things that will expand your life and increase your ability to interact with society.

A sports team, a community service group, a religious society, other after-school activities like a foreign language club or the math team or a science club, are all places where members of the group interact and awkwardness tends to fade away.

Attending a concert, museum, or sports event with a group of people - where at least one is a friend is another way to practice interacting with people.

Chess  is in some ways important.  Chess is in other ways unimportant.

It is specifically irrelevant because it highlights our abilities as human beings to excel at the antiquated form of war known as Siege Warfare.  In its essence chess is siege warfare in the form of a game.  It is specifically relevant because the underlying concepts of Siege Warfare strategy ( restrain, blockade and execute the enemy) are still valid generally in many areas of science and sociology.

It is generally important in every field from abstract game theory field of mathematics to entertainment.
