He had a difficult childhood which probably didn't help. Possibly he had some psychological disorders which have gotten worse the older he became. Playing chess a lot may have made him worse too.

Bobby Fischer from his youth would spend every waking moment absorbed in chess , a mind especially a young one desires knowledge and soaks it up like a sponge , Fischer grew but his appetite for chess never lessened , in preparation for Spassky he studied 100s of master games memorising thousands of moves , a mind is a delicate thing
His legacy remains though and he is rightly revered by chess lovers
