It will largely depend on your rating. I have not seen (or if I have i dont remember) anyone past 1300 (in any type, blitz bullet, standard) that has played some strange a3 on move 1 or anything of the sort. You do get some rare sidelines here-and-there but in rated timed live games you usually are in for a real fight.
Why is internet chess so crappy?

Too many times you get to move 15 and there are still 8 pieces and 8 pawns on the board; nothing past the 3rd rank.
It's a two player game. 1.d4 2.c4 as white and 1.e4 2.f4 should get things up to the fourth rank.
set your rating +/- 100 points and you will not play so many low rated players I am rated 1800+ and feel challenged here.
Thanks all. I'm unrated but in High School I used to be rated 1430 highest. So, I'm not all that good and would still likely be playing low rated players but I'm encoutaraged by the things I read here. As someone already noted I haven't finished any games here yet but I have 8 or 10 underway and none of them are like the garbage games that I have been complaining about. Not one! Thank you all very much. I think I finally arrived at the right place.
New to this site so my remarks may not apply here. I came here to try online chess to see if it is better.
I've been using other sites for a couple of years. It usually takes me 15 or 20 tries to get a game worth playing. What I am looking for is recreational brain stretching. Very rare to get an opponent for a serious game.
Why bother to play games where both sides are playing black? Sometimes it looks to me that nobody wants to win. I thought the object of the game was checkmate but I don't see many people making any moves toward it. Too much 1) Na3 stuff. Maybe they are beginners but most often they want to play a game of tricky tricky dog mess certainly not serious chess to enjoy. Too many times you get to move 15 and there are still 8 pieces and 8 pawns on the board; nothing past the 3rd rank. Why play that? When I see it coming, good position or not, I resign and try to get somebody else.
Chess isn't for everybody. I get that but how can chess players have fun by not playing chess? What don't I understand?
