I have found that Bf4 can lead to some traps and overall a better position for white after Nc3.
Why is it not recommended to play Bf4 in the Englund Gambit?

All of the lines are better for white if they know a bit of the theory. Some variations lead to mate (one of them is an epic pawn mate) or getting Black's queen trapped. Like the worst possible variation is still around +1.5 for white. Here are a few great examples:
