Why is the horse head called a Knight?

I mean seriously, its a no-brainer, its clearly a giant horse head, 0% human, 0% knight. Is there an invisible knight riding the horse or what?

Yes

It's part of a big conspiracy. I something goes wrong they say it's just a horse and they don't get any blame, but if things go right or they look smart, they say look at what I did.

and the bishop doesn't look like a bishop

For the same reason the castle top is called a rook. And the apple pie head is called a queen. Or for that matter, the piece with a golf ball on top is called a pawn.

Chess Variants. com says, "When Chess reached Europe, the concept behind Chess became a royal court rather than a battlefield, and the horse was rechristened as a Knight, which had a place in a royal court, and which normally rode upon a horse."

In Russian it is called a Kon'. Which means a male horse.

Solid thread! Ya gotta admit, it's a well-named piece.  It can be tough as hell, while a reliable defender.  As one would expect from their Knight.

I expect my Bishop to pray and ask for donations.

No te sorprendas, todos sabemos que a estos gringos les gusta inventar cosas mientras estan bajo el efecto de la heroina.

Americans should learn from Spanish speaking people, we actually call pieces for what they are, horses, towers and mmm, we call bishops  with a word that means elephant in Arab. WHICH WAS THE ORIGINAL PIECE IN THE SHAHMATE.

I find it interesting that the bishop was originally called "elephant". I wonder why it was called that. To me, if anything, the bishop kind of looks more like a knight considering the little slit near the top which makes the piece look like it has a face mask. But then again this is about knights not bishops.

Maybe because the game came from Persia/India and elephants were a part of the game?

I really dont know where the hell Brits and Americans got their translations from.

The "elephant" would have made sense for either rook or bishop... you can see a giant elephant charging in a straight line at full speed.  Sure as hell ain't taking any turns.

actually, when the chess was invented Bishop was similar to elephant, it represented a unit that fought on an elephant during the war. Each piece represented a unit of an army. Queen was actually called vezir, vezir is a person who is the most highly ranked person in the country after the king, vezir is like an operator, supervisor and on chess board this piece represented the vezir. I do not know which idiot confused it with a queen and then called it a queen who is totally unrelated to the concept of the vezir.

I found some pictures of Persian chess pieces and the bishop was or looked like an elephant.
