Why is Vladislav Kovalev playing under FIDE flag?

Noticed Kovalev was playing under the FIDE flag (or icon at least, looking on chess.com) and wondered why.  He's a Belarussian citizen, so perhaps related to the turmoil there right now.  Does anyone know?

It is the Belarus flag that is changed on chess.com: "Chess.com has temporarily changed the flag it uses out of solidarity with the people who oppose the non-democratically elected leadership."

Classic. If it was in Israel FIDE and chess.com would have no problems with that. The well known hypocrisy of western based organizations.

I'm not sure it's just chess.com, I have seen this on the Wikipedia too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_World_Cup_2021 Kovalev has a white flag and «FIDE» as «country code». Still wondering why.

GM Vladislav Kovalev refuses to represent Belarus chess federation but he has not another nationality/citizenship/federation. Hence, he plays under FIDE's flag. It was the same case for GM Alireza Firouzja until he got French  federation. If GM Vladislav Kovalev wants to come to the USA, we could give him a flag with 50 stars.
