The main reason why chess isn't popular is because it's considered nerdy.
When one think of a chess player in general, one think of a lonely reject.
It's just not a cool sport. You won't get the ladies playing the game.
Most likely the exact opposite.

If you had just a small amount of guts, and you truly wanted to be a chess player, you would do it, and if society didn't like it they could go to hell. Piss on how society views something. If you want to do it, do it.

Certainly not! Hitler called for the final solution, a thing society at the time would have been very against, just as Stalin starved thousands, nay, MILLIONS of people. If society is against it, it could be really bad. But that is not always true. Hitler had a small amount of organic matter, and he did it! He did the very thing a majority of society was against! Now I don't want to drawl into politics, but if society is against it, sometimes thier is a very rational reason as to why.

I think people easily get bored with what is either difficult, or doesn't make them feel warm and fuzzy, or get them excited. They always want a new thrill. It is hard to get a new thrill, from such an old game, in their eyes.
The more simple the game the more popular. Hence football.
