That's the thing. The Holocaust is undoubtedly the darkest moment in Jewish history, but it wasn't only Jewish history but others such as disabled, gay, Gypsie, communist, and others were killed too.
Hitler accused the Jews of taking and contributing nothing back to Germany, but this was simply a lie as Jewish pragmatism is largely responsible for the great advancements of the 20th century, scientifically, technologically, and socially (the Jews were very active in the Civil Rights movement).

DrFank is exacty right. I've had this (what being Jewish means) discussion with my wife dozens of times. She and her parents are "Jewish" in that they are decended from Polish Jews. Polish people who practiced the faith of Judeaism. They do not practice the faith, haven't been to a synagog in decades and are more agnostic than anything else but when people ask "What are you" they invariably answer Jewish. Why?? Polish Jews look nothing like the original Jews of the Middle East. They are distinct genectically. They are more related to Polish Christians than Middle Eastern Jews. Look at Microneasian and Croatian Muslims. They look nothing like Arabic muslims. Judeaism, Chrisianity, Islam are all FAITHS not races of people.
