Why Not Pair Players Of Approximate Rating ?

A whole lot of rambling without any understanding of the glicko rating system. The first thing to know is that there are very few chess players under 400. It's really hard to find close opponents for you. With a minimum amount of training (even at your age), 800 should be very quickly attained and this issue should go away.

There are over 200,000 members rated 400 and under. It is very possible there will be a small percentage of those players looking for games at any given time, setting the ranges should provide games at comparable rating, though there might be a wait.

Correct. I agree there will potentially be a wait. It's also my gut feel that there won't be an extremely active group of sub 400 players at any time. He may also have to be comfortable playing the same player multiple times.

Only play 10 minute blitz with current rating of 201. I have yet to see a rating as high as 800, but many in the mid to upper 300s and others with ratings of 400. It's not uncommon for someone in the mid to upper 300s resign making we the winner. Quess they are being considerate.

Also contrary to what others have said it is not possible for me to set parameter ratings of those i would like to play, say low of 150 and no higher than 300. If **Chess.com** allowed that from non-paying players their monthly income (IMO) would decrease at the very least by $5000 a month and more likely closer to $20,000 a month.

Thank you for your insightful wisdom

You can set parameters. Problem solved. NEXT?

Only if U R a paying player.  Same goes if one wants to upload a photo for their avatar. Just had two players in the last half four with a rating above 300 that resigned. They have photos so are paying members of Chess.com. SO WHY DON'T they set their parameters so they don't have to waste their time playing someone with a rating below 200 ???

When i say they resigned they were playing White and never made a beginning move ... just resigned and they both had a strong internet connection (4 bars).

Have you checked the settings? Why keep making up stuff. I think you are trolling.

How does one maintain a rating of 200? It seems like you'd have to have absolutely no interest in the game, but continue to play anyway.

I can guarantee the setting is there, for all members. I have verified it on a non-premium account as well.

It is about halfway down that page. Also, creating a Custom Challenge will also allow you to modify the ranges, on both the website and the app. You can't use the quick game options to get access to them, since those will use the defaults.

Right?! Seriously, just looking for hanging pieces would put you higher than 200.

Thank U Martin Stahl for not giving up on me. I tried clicking on "Any" for both Incoming and Outgoing but nothing happened so i copied it to paste here. Now for the 1st time i see the choices, but wasn't able to even see them to know the available choices. However, even here there are apparently no choices allowed for "Max Outgoing" for a non-paying member. The only option that was turned on was "Dark Mode" (whatever that means). All other options on the link page were locked off.

Will go back and try again. It would sure be a relief if i could set the Out Min to -50 (i take that to mean -50 of my rating) and +100 of my rating.

#33 ... That's easy for U with a rating of 800.  Believe me when i say the only time i grab hanging pieces is if i'm playing someone with a 10 minute blitz rating of around 225.  WHY don't those paying members with a rating between 350-to-500 set their minimum at 250 so they don't need to resign when matched against me when playing white (or black) without even making their first move?

OK Martin Stahl i was clicking on the arrow instead of the "Any" ... have set the minimum of -50 and the maximum of +100 for both incoming and outgoing. Will be interested to see the difference in player availability. THANKS again for your HELPFUL posts !

201? I feel like Kasparov. Anyway, keep playing and you'll be able to reach 1000, you can!☺

Avatar of CanonG10

It worked OK for a couple 10 minute blitz games and then i was matched with Soltan Semedli with a rating of 398. At least i held him off for 25 moves before being mated.

Went back and checked the under/over and the "Outgoing" had been changed back to "Any" for both the minimum and maximum so changed them back to -50 and +100.

This is now mucho better with matched players. Just finished a game with 44 moves with less than 10 points rating difference. Much more of a learning challenge. The other player with the lower rating won, but it was a more stimulating game THANKS to Martin_Stahl not giving up on me or belittling me.

So, this thread is closed as far as i'm concerned. I do like Kasparov's aggressive play and will stick with the Ruy Lopex opening. I always try to play aggressive when playing black while also being defensive. Very much like Kasparov's philosophy of life. I don't care if i ever achieve a blitz rating greater than 300 as i just enjoy the competitive challenge of a fair match like that of Grand Masters whose ratings are similar.
