just playing wont improve your chess. I guess you are one of these coffehouse-players who play and play but never improve. The only way to improve is studying chess!

You don't improve because of a haphazard study or even no study at all!  Organize a training schedule.  Don't just work on adding positives but also work on weeding out negatives.  Do you suffer from poor time management?  Then fine tune your thinking process so you only have to analyze one line and one line only.  Learn when it's appropriate to calculate and when to play off principles, how to compose a plan and calculate in critical positions, when to plan, what to revolve a plan around, etc.

Endgame study and studying annotated master games is of primary importance.  Also try playing with stronger players and see where you go wrong.

I agree with all this, adding that playing with opponents a litle bit stronger than you will help you improve. That is what I do against the computer, I set the rating higher than mine but not more than 400. Study you games to learn from your mistakes, and of course study chess, don't just read books or watch videos without thinking, understanding them and applying in practice what you see.

Slow time controls is the key to improvement. You don't improve by blitz and rapid time controls at your level.

Where do you get this idea?

Lots and lots and lots of GM's were obsessed with blitz.

Many play blitz 50 or 60 to 1 slow 30-45 minute game.

Didn't seem to get in their way of improvement.

But they didn't get to being GMs by playing blitz.

I think "standard" and "blitz" games are two different beasts and while playing a lot of one sort will help - to an extent - with the other, you need to almost relearn your thinking process if you've played lots of one then go over to the other. It's like the difference between "proper" cricket and Twenty20.

Completely agree! You will never improve with anything in life unless you learn from your mistakes.

Suggestion: You are not a patzer if you have a low rating

Somehow, this apparently hit a nerve in my psyche. As I was flossing my teeth awhile ago, suddenly I developed a Tourette-syndrome twitch.

I found myself thinking...

Just because you have a low IQ doesn't mean you are stupid.

Although you like to eat meat, doesn't mean you aren't a vegetarian.

Being short and skinny doesn't mean you aren't tall and fat.

I must stop this at once. Convolvus...or Convoloulus...or whatever your stinkin' name, thank you very much!

I sorry to hear this person cannot spel. Tread backwards to where a house is and feel out for a newspaper. Can't say it will be pleasant.

I'm guessing you're a troll because you know what you have to do to improve it. If you can't get yourself to do it, then nothing can.

Ok but I'll give it a shot. Instead of the conventional way try buying a biography of one of the great players.. with games of course. Lasker for example. Read it and play through the games. It will take a long time but I am not suggesting you read the whole thing but its mere to get you hungry.

When playing through the games note the moves that surprise you. Or when you think "hey why doesn't he play such and such". Stop at those moments and try to figure out the whys and why nots.

Good luck.

You're just not putting the time in. Figure out if you want to get better or not before you think about how you're going to do it. It doesn't seem you really enjoy it.

Wofford

If you dont want to put in the time just play and enjoy the game your not gonna be a better Person by becoming a better player so just have fun with chess.

It's simple, do courses and read books. Knowledge is power!

Sometimes you have to hate it a little bit. Then you start to love it. Once you love it and play it for fun, the sky is the limit.

DrSpudnik

"Fun"? So you play chess for fun? I never thought of that approach.

stewmoney

What other reason would you play a game?

I'd recommend doing puzzles or analysing every won and lost game and ask your self what you can learn from this cause you'll never get a perfect game unless you're seriously good

TheMsquare

Well il answer your question a bit differently to your critics.

I recommend that you do what a world champion suggests.. (il let you figure out wich one to spark your interest in learning about chess beyond the rules of the game)

1. Play as much chess as you can.

Try out all sorts of ideas. Put the principles always drilled in all the chessbooks etc to the test in plenty of games.

This way you will keep your interest. I've played almost all my life and I'm still fascinated with chess.

Read. Whether it's books online articles. Watching videos if you prefer audio.

Test what you learn about chess out in your games.

Have fun. That's the most important thing. If you don't find something interesting just let it go and look for another topic on the game. Untill you find what you like.

I highly recommend searching Gothamchess on YouTube. All of the content is useful ,creative and entertaining.

Under the heading learn is a section called Endgames. Practice those and challenge yourself to complete them in faster and faster times. Look at how the engine responds to your moves. It will nearly always play the best moves at that point so it can teach you how to frustrated your opponents

Lastly

Have fun
