Why Resign When Ahead?

Played a game today and opponent had achieved a very significant material advantage by time we got to the end game. Opponent could have easily won, but chose to resign giving me the game. Why do people do this?
Need to do something.

Maybe something came up and they had to leave.
Regardless of whether I am winning or not, if I have to unavoidably abandon a game, I generally resign out of courtesy.

If you intend to be a better chess player online, you will need to learn how to premove and accept it as part of the game online.
