Have someone noticed that in comparation with india , china has not so much people in chess competitions ? what happend ?

1. The number of top level competitors that come from a country is highly correlated with how many people play the sport or game, and how much that culture values it. India's cricket team is much more successful than their soccer team. It's not just a numbers game of what the relative population of different countries is.

2. There is a game similar to chess, called Xiangqi, or sometimes just "Chinese chess". This basically supplants chess as a casual game in China. When I lived in China, I saw Xiangqi played in parks hundreds of times but cannot recall a single time I saw standard chess being played.
This is a significant reason that you see fewer casual players on platforms such as this.

3. If you're talking about professional competitions then China has been well represented, with a long standing women's world champion, current women's world champion and recent men's world champion among many others.

I thought that Divya Deshmukh won the Women's Chess World Cup 2025, she is from India not China.

i took India for example for their population similarity with China;

so, at the end of the day , chinese like more other competitions, then

It is strange & a good point to bring out Victoria. Could the use of this app be for some reason limited in China or has chess suffered a popularity decrease? Could it have something to do with world polical situation right now. I don't know. I remember growing up China being one of the top chess countries. There was that one girl chess prodigy who came from China. What is her name and is she still competing? Hmm 🤔

russians are also another issue, i expected also more; since the big boom of chess lately in the 90 was world wide known by the kasparov and karpov, as i remember

Avatar of DareTower
The Chinese girl prodigy was probably Hou Yifan (born 1994). She was the youngest female player ever to qualify for the title of grandmaster at age 14 and the youngest ever to win the Women's World Chess Championship at age 16. She has set a new record by becoming the youngest full professor in the history of Shenzhen University at the age of 26. So it doesn't seem like she's playing chess anymore. There's other players like Lu Miaoyi (born 2010), a Woman Grandmaster who won the Chinese Women's Championship at the age of 14 in 2024, 21 years after her own mother, Xu Yuanyuan, achieved the same title.

what is more difficult, to get at the top or to stay at the top for a while ?

Avatar of DareTower
Hmm getting there can be impossible for most people, but probably to stay on top is most difficult because motivation easily stops when goals are reached. Unless you're Magnus Carlsen. Or Lewis Hamilton. It looks like Hou wanted to be first in multiple things. I'm kind of the same way. When I reach a goal I find some other goal that is not the same, because the same one stopped to matter. Then it's just repetitive.

i always thought that the best chess players in the world would be old people, because of their experience along the years; but unless they retire intentionally, looks like chess works different; also may be people get tired of thinking, there are millions of combinations in chess

To your og question. Perhaps the media got tired of covering Chinese chess players and started to highlight India and other countries. Perhaps Chinese chess is still equally strong but less talked about. Because of the nature of media always looking for the next new thing (and politics affecting things). Still there's a part of me that will always remember the Chinese girl players as most inspirational to me personally because before them women chess was less or not at all talked about. I was always a gamer girl growing up and not interested in traditionally girly hobbies.

Yeah I agree with you that chess has a lot of variety in it and different types of it to discover so it can be a challenge for many years and decades to conquer all sides of it.

yes, i think politics, matters, and have a lot of power in competitions, doing competitions more political than spiritual sport competition; those politicians wants always more power !!

Avatar of DareTower
I'm not going to discuss politics, I don't think that talk belongs to chess forum. It can trigger people too easily. I do agree that it should be about the sports! I have been watching The Queen's Gambit (finally) and I am kind of annoyed by the substance use aspect in it... I don't think it is very realistic. I personally would not touch any substances or even alcohol. Perhaps they just didn't have any other plot ideas. I don't like it if anyone thinks that women chess players are addicts etc. I have not watched the whole series yet. I'm worried that I will not like the ending.

Reading real life stories is far more interesting than fictional series anyway. I would have liked it if the series was based on a true story for example that Chinese woman who first became a gm and then a professor. That is one inspirational story!

There can be drama and difficulties but the substances are just unnecessary and irrelevant to the story. There is the alcohol and drug addict adoptive mother too. It paints a picture like women are emotional wrecks who need to be medicated daily. I'm disappointed that the subject of women chess was ruined like this in the series. I would rather watch something more inspirational than a series where the women are addicts.

"....I do agree that it should be about the sports! " another politican decision; when chess was labeled as ¨sport¨- i mean, people dont want to enter into politics, but the fact is that politics are sorrounding everything in the world

Avatar of DareTower
Perhaps it's not a sport, I really don't know. I don't have the expertise of that label to really say. I was trying to hint that discussing politics is not allowed in this forum 😅 So I don't want to give any opinion on any political matter here.

meanwhile they forbid the russian flag... and they dont want get into politics XD nothing but hypocrit and funny

Avatar of BlondyTween

i had a stroke reading that title.

Avatar of 1945victoria

its may be not very known world wide, but chinese are good at maths, informatics, and ingeneering, so chess isnt that strange for a mind that is good at that subjects
