Why you should find an alternative to chess.com

Chess.com once was THE very best and only site for online chess.

Here, however, is what I have gathered from their reps about why their application continually freezes causing about (1/3 games) by my estimate to be lost due to their poor mgmt of their site, as opposed to chess tactics and strategy:

They don't have sufficient bandwith to support the ad schemes and number of members.  So, when there is enough demand online, they just say FU to their non-paying members, allowing them to lose games due to the application freezing.

I encourage you to contacting their reps to ask about this: some will say the problem is on your end. Others will say they are working on it. Others will say it is an advertisers fault and they are considering "drastic" changes.  Others will say your ISP is the problem.  But the bottom line is that they have known about the problem for more than a year and they have no intention of fixing it.  And as you know, this site is not "free" to non-paying members.  In fact, we generate a LARGE share of their revenue through click commerce and their ad schemes.  And yet they say FU to their non-paying members ... sometimes your games just wont work because we want to count money, not be a chess site.

Why?  I suspect that the only thing they care about at this point monetization.  And like most idiots who go that route, they don't believe that their awesome enterprise will ever really crumble.  I know that i have discovered some alternatives which are not as sexy as chess.com in terms of features BUT WHERE I CAN ACTUALLY PLAY CHESS.

The only thing I dislike in chess.com are the ads during the games. It causes lag and it's pointless since nobody gonna read them during the game.

breakingbad12

So I think the lag is caused by advertisement, and not by some kind of conspiracy.

For me the problem is the unfriendliness of the forums and the comment section of the articles. I'm just looking for a friendly place where adults discuss chess and help each other to enjoy the game. US Chess is great but there is very little forum activity there.

It is to force people to pay for membership. Once you get fed up enough you will either pay (which is what Erik wants) or leave (which Erik doesn't care about because you will keep your account open [just abandon it] and he can still claim wild numbers for membership). There are several ways around the ads and they work rather well.

But I prefer to give my money to places that don't FORCE you to pay. (As a note, I used to pay then realized things are not quite right here at chess"YOU SHALL NOT MENTION ANY OTHER CHESS SITES BECAUSE I AM INSECURE ABOUT MY PRODUCT".com. But instead of improving the product (or at least not destroying it, hello v.3, I'm looking at you) they force you to pay and shut down any talk of other sites.

It is their prerogative, of course, just as it is my prerogative to pay elsewhere.

I agree. Overall chess.com used to be the best website for chess. But now there are better choices, depending on what someone is looking for. I still like it for some things, but I've only played a couple games in the last month or so because it's just not very fun here anymore. It's just not worth the effort when other websites offer the ability to just simply play a normal game of chess without all the distractions. And like Rsava said, the whole thing about not wanting other chess sites mentioned is really weird. Normally a business enterprise likes to be compared to it's competition because that is where the business owner can brag about all the ways his particular business is better. Honestly now I can see why chess.com doesn't want competition mentioned. They didn't used to have much competition, but now they do, and many of them are better. Not too much to brag about now.

Rsava, yeah, it's true... they could easily get rid of those pointless in-game ads but they don't (because money). Not very ethical. The censorship is also quite annoying and unethical... chess.com is a great site, but those things could be improved.

Only the RSS group can prevent the fall of chesscom now, without their intervention chesscom will soon be the laughing stock instead of the fishstock.

In that case chess.com is already over.

I don't pay. And I cannot remember the last time i had a game crash on me, while using my phone.

Strange how this was moved to off-topic.

It started in General Discussion, is a discussion about chess.com but yet gets moved to the sub-forum that does not get listed on the side.

More BS from the chess.com site. Poor little Erik's feelings got hurt and he told someone to move it (he never does the stuff himself so he can remain "innocent".

What a loser of a site this place has become.

Having alternatives (options), are best!

This would mean that we would connect one-on-one in a private computer session where I can troubleshoot your issue. If you are interested in doing this, please reach out to me with a private message and we will schedule a time!

They don't have to get rid of ad revenue.  Just sacrifice a little of it to expand bandwidth to support the ad schemes and membership. But clearly, monetizing not chess is their aim now, regardless of the undermining of the site.

The message from DaveDtech is balaoney.  They have known about this issue for a year and they already know the cause.  They will tell you to clear cookies, look at problems with your ISP ... same rigmarol.  The problem is they don't want to pay for the bandwidth to support the application given the membership levels and ad schemes.  Another of their techs already told me (3 months ago) that this is essentially true and that they are considering "drastic changes" which - of course - like all their other promises over the last year never materializd.

Sadly, a really non-intelligent comment, which is surprising given that most chess.com members seem to be really intelligent thoughtful people.  If you need it explained to you how "free" members do more for chess.com than it does for them, you are severely handicapped in either your knowledge or thinking.

THis is the problem I originally wrote about.  They need a certain bandwidth to run the workload of concurrent games, given the membership and their monetizing ad schemes.  They have data that clearly shows that bandwidth is insufficient.  Your rating on chess.com reflects that they prioritize for the app will freeze during a game when the bandwidth limits are exceeded.  One of their more honest techs basically admitted this to me.

Your 1 1/2 month membership has told you all of this?
