I think if they're actually in your face, they're considered apart of you. It's called the 'elephant man theory'.

Moon_Knight

Heh. Elephant man theory. They'll definetly keep quiet if your a big guy or can beat them up.

Why?

Because they might be stronger on the field but most chessplayers it seems are small and weakish. Hehe do I smell advantage? ;D

Because she packed her trunk and left?

Perhaps this thread ought to be titled:

"Why you should be rude."

we all like to play chess. why do some of us feel the need to trash others? does it make you feel superior to diss a lower rated player. i've noticed this too. perhaps those among us with superior attitudes shoul be known as chess brats instead of chess nerds. what's the reason? i don't know of any GM or titled player who makes a 6 figure income from tournament play. perhaps we should try to popularize the game through good sportsmanship and fair play, and hopefully and out of the self-centered " hip hop" culture.  an insult might improve your ego, but does nothing for the game. if this pisses you off, ESAD.

Moon_Knight, your post belies your age.  You speak well and I'm sure are an accomplished chess player.  Play to your own strength, not your oppenents appairent weakness.  Believe me, not all chess players are the meak type you describe, take me for example I'm dead sexy baby!  But seriously, even a hefty dude will think twice about you if just stole him on the board, I mean its not like you made someone twice your size sit down and play a game of chess.

About the rudeness, yea it happens but more so in live chess.  For over a year I had a routine of noon cocktails and some chess.  My rating didnt always represent my skill level and often when play someone with a higher rating, they naturally expect an easier time.  I love mating someone a good 200 points higher!  This is often where the dissappearing opponent phenomenon comes in in live chess, you can just feel the befudledness through the net.. love it!

I for one do not mind losing, how else would one not born a Bobby Fishcer learn what to improve.

This has been discussed in some other thread. Wasn't it a guy complaining about IMs and Silman in particular?

You better not be talking about me--I pity the poor fool who's wasted his time reading my nonsensical ramblings!

I think he refers to someone who started a thread the day (s)he opened their chess.com account which attacked the arrogance of titled players in general and singled out Silman: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-players/gms-ims-etc-are-elitists

i don't mean to double post but i wanted to say this-

i don't want to disable chat. for one, i am against censorship and am not going to block out someone just because they have a poor choice of words. if i really maybe want to or need to then i might disable chat, but i'm against the idea. in the other forum i frequent i never block anyone simply because i want to absorb everything. avoiding the problem doesn't make it go away.

Nasty-Nate

yea well... let me just say that i'm not persecuting indian peoples... i'm just citing a handful of recent experiences i had. although i was going to post this which is from a game i "played" just earlier.

player: can you play fast

me: no i have 30 minutes to play

they resigned after move 3. i mean... really. well, i think their words were slightly different, i didn't write it down. but i joined a game, and this guy brought his queen out on move 2. upon my contemplation of the situation he decided to resign for whatever reason, perhaps because i wasn't playing a 30 minute blitz game. i don't count this as a win... i really wanted to play a game!

I disagree, public shaming is more embarrassing for the complaining side, especially on such Internet forums it's so sad

How so? What is so embarassing about pointing out someones childish and rude behavior?

I agree with heinzie, it smacks of petulance...in addition to which it foists said behavior onto a much wider audience.  In addition to which...you're supposed to report these matters to a mod (not post them on a forum).

I have absolutely no intention of reporting this person, or even naming and shaming them. People have kind of missed the point. It's just a little thing saying "don't be rude because you may get embarassed".

And this thread also wasn't supposed to spark off racial discussions, so please everyone don't make it into that :)

I think Chess.com should allow players to disable chat after the game has finished.

I find  that instead of people trash talking during a game, they start their trash talk after the game has finished, and when I am looking for another game, it will be good to have an option to shut them up.

Jantar

I have only played against 2 rude players, one fromm USA and one from Indonesia.  I have also had many pleasant games against players from those same countries, so I don't believe race or nationality comes into it.  However both players were quite young, so may its a maturity issue instead.

lumenator

As Bambi once said, if you can't say anything nice, shut the fk up.  Or would have said if it been directed by Scorcese rather than Disney...Smile

But sometimes you forget to disable chat and then you meet one of those guys. Unfortunately Chess.com does not have a feature to automatically disable chat in all games.

You are wrong. Once you disable chat, it will always be disabled, unless you enable it.

That's true for live chess, not online chess.

They all can be jerks. But from my experience the higher rated ones tend to be a bit more of a douche.

Your online rating is in the 1400's. If by "higher rated ones" you mean people with ratings of 1500-1600, then you are not really contradicting what I said.
