I don't think it would. I can see using the A button to pick up a piece and drop it, and then pressing the B button to enter the selection.
I don't think i'd get it if became available. It seems like a bit of a hassle to play. I'd much rather use my hands or a mouse.
However, if they made some sort of battle chess game, that might be interesting.

No you don't use the pointer but the axis keys to move the pieces. THe game even shows what possible moves a piece can make if you like.
