Will Carlsen Not Play?

Carlsen will most likely not play. His proposed format will most likely not be accepted.

The way Carlsen sees it, he gets another 3-year break before he plays the world championship again. What if Nepo wins the 2024 Candidates too? Just going to play the same guy over and over again until they reach the same number as Karpov-Kasparov? Very unappealing to Carlsen. His hope is that Ding will win the match against Nepo, and then Carlsen will get his chance at a match against Ding in the next cycle.

He's too good for those dorks anyway.. He has nothing to prove

Carlsen v Nepo seems like a waste of time... for Carlsen. If Magnus doesn't play he'll still be the #1 FIDE ranked chess player in the world. What has Magnus to gain by beating an uninspiring challenger like Nepo, again?!!!

It's amazing how many people feel after one match it's useless to ever play again. It's ONE match! Does no one remember the first 6 games last WCC? The game that went 136 moves?!  And how is playing an event where you win over $1,000,000 a waste of time? Magnus ain't THAT rich.

He's totally bluffing. Why wouldn't he play?

This is totally different than Fischer forfeiting his title in 1975 against Karpov.

Carlsen has already played several world championship matches and won them with relative ease (vs. Anand *twice, Karjakin, Caruana, and Nepo). He has more than cemented his legacy as one of the undisputed greatest chess players of all time. What more is there for him to prove?

Basically, Fischer was a coward who walked away from the fame and glory because he was scared of losing. Carlsen is just totally bored of being the best in the world. I'm a Fischer fan and even I can admit he would have reached further heights if he had fewer personality defects.

karjakin and caruana went to tiebreaks lol, not easy

it was easy in the sense that Carlsen knew he had an advantage both times in the blitz tiebreaks, so he could draw the classical part of the match basically in autopilot mode and win in overtime. his match strategy was solid and he was only able to pull off the execution against formidable opposition due to his insane level of skill and sheer dominance.

notice how after going down a point to Karjakin, Carlsen was able to bounce back by winning a game at will. he is the kind of player that can convert drawn positions into wins and lost positions into draws. even Kasparov has admitted that Carlsen is like a lethal combination of Fischer's tactical brilliance and Karpov's positional mastery.

"And how is playing an event where you win over $1,000,000 a waste of time?"
++ The prize fund for Carlsen-Nepo 2 might be lower than for Carlsen-Nepo 1.
Carlsen has also to pay his team of grandmasters and cloud engines.
And he has to spend months of his life preparing.

I still feel spending months of his life preparing is nothing. It’s what he’s done with his whole life so far. And if he truly is undecided, than he’s preparing already happy.png

Good point with how many expenses come with the WCC though. I didn’t think about him paying other GMs for their help preparing and what not. Would definitely add up $$$.

But that's what makes their rivalry is so special between them. Born in same year. Playing against each other since they were young.

Either Carlson is haggling for more money, or he is prepping for Nepo while leaving Nepo not knowing if he will face Ding or Carlson. Smart strategy, but not nice.

Pretty funny: "play the same guy over and over again...... " Sounds like the chess version of Groundhog Day. wink

Carlsen said that he would not play the next WC unless Firouzja was the Challenger. Nepomniatchi is the Challenger. Put your thoughts here as to whether or not you think Carlsen will play.

And correct any spelling errors.

It appears that Carlsen has learned something from Fischer. However, I really don't care whether Carlsen plays or not.

P.S. - I sher hope I dint make any speling errers...

Yeah, he's learned how to keep people guessing. But if Magnus doesn't play, let's hope he doesn't wander off into some delusional world of fantasies and demons, like Bobby.

   BTW, yer spelin is atroshus!

I hadn't thought of that. Diabolical...

I don't think Carlsen cares about "more money" at this point. His net worth is, apparently, $50 million (and likely increasing by the day).

Eventually, you become so wealthy that money no longer interests you.

I could be wrong, but my guess is that he wants a change to the match format, to make it more interesting. Perhaps to include more Rapid (or even Blitz?!) in the match.

Think he is practicing against a Nepo bot?

Prepping for Nepo? What sort of prep is that? Downloading some games on his phone to play so he doesn't get too bored while being ahead 4 to nothing like last time?
